Studio 2009: valid MIF-files not recognized

I'm trying to translate a project which contains Framemaker generated MIF files (FM 8).

According to Sudio documentation, the format is supported (FM 8 and FM 9 MIFs).

But when I try to process them for translation I get the following error:

* The file could not be opened because it is not in valid MIF file format. *

I've tried to change settings and even created MIF test files with Framemaker 8, but the problem persists.

However Trados 2007 Freelance package has no problems with the files.

Am I missing something or is this a bug???

Did you save as MIF7 or MIF8? Jul 9

FM8 gives you the possibility to save MIF7 and MIF8.
Studio will recognize only MIF8 files.

It is strange Jul 9

as my Studio does "eat" Framemaker MIF8 files without any problems...

Sorry, but I do not know any workaround for that.

Maybe... Jul 9

Jerzy,

are your MIFs created with FM8 or FM9 (or some other software)? Mine are with FM8 (with all the patches).

If yours are with FM8 too, then maybe (or maybe not) the operating system version or language has something to do with it.

I have Windows Vista Premium (Finnish version). FM8 is english.

(ps. I deinstalled and reinsalled Studio to no avail)

Cannot open MIF from SDL Studio 2009 Aug 20

I have the same problem as tapsa: impossible to open FM8 files from SDL Studio 2009 !!!!
I have tried many different MIF files and just create a very simple text file in FrameMaker then save it as MIF (8 of course) with the same result:
"The file could not be opened because it is not in valid MIF file format"

What's happen ????????

My system: Windows XP Pro SP3 French, FrameMaker version: 8.0p277

Hi Niki,
FIY: you can run Studio 2009 and SDL Trados 2007 at the same time. Please read all related articles on talisma.sdl.com.

Invalid Mif files Sep 1

Hello,
I have the same problem : i can't open any mif 08 (or7 or even 9) iles in Trados 2009. I'm intending to do an alignment but i can't enven open the .mif (normally supported by trados 2009).I even tried to use my trados 2007 version (that i haven't uninstalled) but it also gives me an error message).
I'd be grad to get a solution if anyone finds one.
Thanks

Assistance from SDL Sep 3

I got assistance from SDL on this problem. Here is what they found:

"I found that if you change your Norwegian regional settings (to English, German or Czech - I don't know why Norwegian doesn't work, one of IT mysteries) - you will be able to open the MIF files without problems (you can change even without restarting OS).
The problem is in one of the 3rd party components which is used for the MIF parsing, we will try to find how to fix this and release update ASAP."
