The project involved forming and coordinating a team of eight translators, including myself, to produce the English-language edition of Gambero Rosso's authoritative Vini d'Italia 2008 wine guide.
I have managed eight such projects for Gambero Rosso (Italian Wines 2001-2008 inclusive). Italian Wines 2008 is currently in press. The previous edition, Italian Wines 2007, was published in April 2007 (ISBN 978-1-890142-12-4).

Una parte importante del Paese è complice delle corporazioni
I sodalizi diffidano del merito: per essi è un fastidioso disturbo
Spero che il ministro Pier Luigi Bersani riesca a vincere la sua battaglia per le liberalizzazioni. Ma è possibile che il risultato, alla fine della partita, sia soltanto la versione aggiornata e migliorata di alcuni fra i numerosi concordati che lo Stato italiano è stato costretto a stipulare con i piccoli e grandi poteri corporativi della società nazionale. Gli ordini professionali e le associazioni di categoria cederanno alcune prerogative e apriranno qualche varco nelle loro fortezze. Masi batteranno per conservare il diritto di autogoverno e di cooptazione. Sosterranno che questi diritti vengono esercitati nell’interesse della comunità e servono a garantire la qualità del servizio prestato.
Sono argomenti discutibili, spesso infondati, ma le corporazioni possono contare, per opporsi all’iniziativa del ministro per lo Sviluppo economico, sulla complicità di una parte importante del Paese. Se la battaglia di Bersani è così difficile, la causa non è l’importanza dell’associazione interessata da un singolo provvedimento o la sua capacità di nuocere con la propria resistenza al traffico di una città, al lavoro dei tribunali o alle legittime aspettative del cittadino consumatore. La sua forza sta nel tacito consenso di una società nazionale in cui ogni cittadino sa che la sconfitta di una corporazione può preannunciare la fine della propria.
Vi è una vecchia leggenda che occorre forse sfatare. Gli italiani non sono individualisti. Il «particulare» di cui parlava Guicciardini non è l’interesse del singolo cittadino, deciso a realizzare se stesso in libera gara con coloro che praticano lo stesso mestiere e hanno le stesse ambizioni. Il «particulare » italiano è l’interesse di gruppi organizzati in cui l’individuo è anzitutto socio, collega, sodale, fratello, compare. Alcuni fra i migliori economisti italiani, da Mario Monti a Francesco Giavazzi, ci hanno spiegato negli scorsi giorni quali effetti negativi queste corporazioni possano avere sul costo, sulla qualità e sull’efficacia dei loro servizi.
A me sembra che accanto a questo effetto ve ne sia un altro, forse più grave. Le corporazioni diffidano del merito. Sanno che l’applicazione di questo criterio per il reclutamento e la promozione delle singole persone introduce nella professione un intollerabile elemento di imprevedibilità ed è un attentato al diritto di cooptazione. Gli avvocati, i notai, i professori universitari e altri membri di antiche professioni liberali si considerano comproprietari di un sodalizio cui debbono poter accedere anzitutto i figli, i congiunti, gli allievi, i collaboratori fedeli. È questa la ragione per cui in Italia i pubblici concorsi vengono spesso ritardati, rinviati, aggiustati o più semplicemente aggirati con il sistema della chiamata personale, del reclutamento clientelare o dell’ope legis. Il merito come criterio di scelta rappresenta per tutte le corporazioni un fastidioso fattore di disturbo. È meglio cooptare sulla base di altri criteri: i legami di sangue, lo scambio di favori o la fedeltà.
Commetteremmo un errore se pensassimo che queste caratteristiche appartengono soltanto alle associazioni contemplate nei primi provvedimenti di Bersani. Ve ne sono molte altre, fra cui persino quella dei giornalisti, che dovrebbero guardarsi allo specchio e fare un esame di coscienza. Le società di mestiere, con i loro statuti di autoprotezione, hanno svolto in alcuni momenti un ruolo utile al Paese. Oggi sono uno dei motivi della lentezza con cui l’Italia si adatta alle condizioni di un mondo in cui vincono, nelle battaglie dell’economia e del progresso scientifico, soltanto quelli che mettono in campo i migliori.

Associations distrust merit, considering it a nuisance
I hope that Minister Pier Luigi Bersani manages to win his battle for liberalization. But it is possible that at the end of the day, the outcome will be merely an updated and improved version of some of the many concordats that the Italian state has been forced to stipulate with its corporate powers, great and small. Professional and trade associations will give up some of their prerogatives, and will open one or two breaches in their strongholds. But they will also fight to keep their right to self-government and cooptation, claiming these entitlements are exercised in the interest of the community, and serve to guarantee the quality of the service provided.
These arguments are debatable, and often without foundation, but the corporations can count on the complicity of a significant proportion of the country to oppose the minister for Economic Development’s initiative. If Mr Bersani’s battle is so daunting, the reason is not the importance of one association affected by a single measure, or its ability to do harm by holding up a town’s traffic, the work of the courts, or the legitimate expectations of the consumer. Its strength lies in the tacit consent of a society in which every citizen knows that the defeat of one corporation may herald the demise of his or her own association.
There is an old belief that we ought perhaps to debunk: Italians are not individualists. Guiccardini’s “particulare” is not the interest of the individual citizen, determined to fulfil him or herself in free competition with those who ply the same trade and share the same ambitions. The Italian “particulare” is the vested interest of organized groups of which the individual is first and foremost a member, colleague, fellow, brother, or compadre. Some of Italy’s finest economists, including Mario Monti and Francesco Giavazzi, have in the past few days expounded the deleterious impact such corporations can have on the cost, quality, and effectiveness of their services.
To me, there is another, perhaps even more serious, consequence that we could add: associations distrust merit. They know that the application of this criterion to the recruitment and promotion of individual members introduces into the profession an intolerable element of unpredictability, and undermines their right of cooptation. Lawyers, notaries, university professors, and other members of the ancient liberal professions view themselves as the joint owners of an organization to which entry should be granted primarily to their children, relatives, pupils, and loyal associates. This is the reason why public recruitment examinations in Italy are so often delayed, postponed, tampered with, or simply sidestepped by ad personam nominations, recruitment through patronage, or ad hoc laws. Merit as a selection criterion is an irritating element of disturbance for all corporations. Better to coopt on other criteria, such as blood ties, exchanges of favors, or loyalty.
We would err to imagine that these characteristics belong exclusively to the associations covered by Mr Bersani’s initial measures. There are many more such groups, including journalists, who should be looking in the mirror and examining their consciences. Guilds and their self-protecting statutes have at various times played a useful role in Italy’s history. Today, they are one of the reasons for Italy’s sluggish adaptation to the conditions of a world in which the battles for the economy and scientific progress are won only by those who field their best.

La Tenuta San Leonardo, un borgo circondato da mura, con i suoi quasi trecento ettari, occupa perfettamente il perimetro del feudo di un tempo. I circa venti ettari a vigneto sono posti in posizione collinare, su terreni piuttosto sciolti, collocati ad altezze varianti dai 150 ai 200 metri con orientamento nord - sud. Più in alto, su terreni sabbiosi, sono collocati i Cabernet, Sauvignon e Franc, mentre leggermente più in basso, su terreni ciottolosi, il Merlot ha trovato il suo giusto ambientamento.
La forma d'allevamento varia dalla tradizionale pergola trentina al moderno e razionale guyot, meno produttivo, ma più adatto per fornire vini di maggiore concentrazione, sistema che proprio la nostra azienda agricola fu la prima ad introdurre in provincia di Trento.
Le viti hanno da 10 ad oltre 25 anni d'età e la densità d'impianto varia da 4000 a 5500 ceppi per ettaro.
Anche se nella zona i vitigni della tradizione sono piuttosto il Lambrusco a foglia tonda, il Marzemino e il Teroldego, per il nostro progetto di vino di qualità abbiamo decisamente puntato sui classici vitigni dell'Haut Médoc e sulla formula del taglio bordolese classico.
In vigna sono quindi presenti Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc e Merlot, varietà che rispettivamente con percentuali del 60 - 30 e 10% vanno a comporre il San Leonardo.
Siamo particolarmente soddisfatti dei risultati delle uve Cabernet Franc che nel nostro "terroir" raggiungono una maturazione ottimale e un carattere decisamente meno "verde" e ruvido del consueto e contribuiscono a dare al nostro vino un'impronta particolare di longevità ed eleganza.

Tenuta San Leonardo, an ancient walled settlement, extends over almost 300 hectares of what was once a medieval fief. About 20 of those hectares are planted to vine on fairly loose-packed hillside soil. The vines face north-south at between 150 and 200 metres above sea level. Higher up, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon are grown on sandy soil while Merlot has found a welcoming home on the pebbly soil slightly lower down.
Training systems vary. Some of the vine stock is trained over the traditional "pergola Trentina" trellises and the rest is pruned to the modern, rational Guyot system, which is less productive but more suitable for producing wines with good concentration. Tenuta San Leonardo was the first estate to introduce the Guyot system of cane pruning into the province of Trento. The age of the vines ranges from 10 to 25 years and planting densities vary from 4,000 to 5,500 vines per hectare. The traditional local varieties are Lambrusco a foglia tonda, Marzemino and Teroldego but for our wine quality project we have opted for the classic grapes of the Haut Médoc and Bordeaux blending.
The varieties planted are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. These grapes go into San Leonardo in the respective proportions of 60%, 30% and 10%. We are particularly satisfied with the results we have achieved from Cabernet Franc, which on the Tenuta San Leonardo terroir ripens to perfection and acquires a markedly less green, rustic personality than usual. It is Cabernet Franc that gives our wine such longevity and elegance.
