100,000 Strong Initiative Jan 24, 2011

http://www.state.gov/p/eap/regional/100000_strong/index.htm

MISSION
Citing the strategic importance of the U.S.-China relationship, in November 2009, President Barack Obama announced the “100,000 Strong” initiative, a national effort designed to increase dramatically the number and diversify the composition of American students studying in China. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton officially launched the initiative in May 2010 in Beijing. The Chinese government strongly supports the initiative and has already committed 10,000 “Bridge Scholarships” for American students to study in China.

This initiative seeks to prepare the next generation of American experts on China who will be charged with managing the growing political, economic and cultural ties between the United States and China. The initiative also seeks to develop specific opportunities and funding sources for underrepresented students to study in China.

Why more Americans don't travel abroad Feb 4, 2011

http://www.cnn.com/2011/TRAVEL/02/04/americans.travel.domestically/index.html?hpt=C2

(CNN) -- The numbers tell the story: Of the 308 million-plus citizens in the United States, 30% have passports.

That's just too low for such an affluent country, said Bruce Bommarito, executive vice president and chief operating officer for the U.S. Travel Association.

"Americans are comfortable in their own environment," Bommarito said.

...

"Americans are going to have to speak more languages and be more culturally savvy," Kepnes said. "We have to change because we have to do business with all these other cultures."

That's music to Bommarito's ears. After being nervous the first time he landed in China, he said he now feels just as comfortable on the streets of Beijing as he does anywhere in the United States.

"One of the true benefits of travel to foreign countries is it's probably the greatest form of diplomacy," Bommarito said. "Strange ideas go away and you realize that we're all similar, just with different cultures."

Another advantage to being bilingual Feb 19, 2011

http://pagingdrgupta.blogs.cnn.com/2011/02/18/foreign-language-learning-good-for-your-brain/?hpt=C2

If you had any doubts about exposing your child - or yourself - to a foreign language, there's more evidence than ever that being bilingual has enormous benefits for your brain.

Scientists presented their research supporting this idea Friday at the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

As the human body begins its natural decline in old age, bilinguals seem to maintain better cognitive function, said Ellen Bialystok of York University in Toronto, Ontario. This is the case even for people with dementia. Bialystok and colleagues have studied many Alzheimer's patients, both monolinguals and bilinguals. They found that bilinguals were on average four to five years older than monolinguals at comparable points of neurological impairment.

"The famous Chinese character for picnic area" May 16, 2011

The lady in the video clip says:
Somewhere in the middle of South Dakota, I turned to my friend and asked her a question that’s been bothering me for two thousand miles: What’s up with the Chinese character I keep seeing by side of the road?

I would like to tell her that the Chinese character means 开心一点 (see below)!

Some excerpts from the above Oct 20, 2013

Since 2000, 1 million more people have moved to Texas from other states than have left.

And as Connolly's story shows, these pilgrims aren't coming just from places like Michigan, where a major industry has collapsed, but also from more prosperous states like New York and California. Over the past 20 years, more than 4 million Californians have moved to Texas, according to Weinstein. "That's two cities the size of Houston," he notes.

On the flip side, Texas has a higher per capita income than California, adjusted for cost of living, and nearly catches up with New York by the same measure. Once you factor in state and local taxes, Texas pulls ahead of New York--by a wide margin. The website MoneyRates ranks states on the basis of average income, adjusting for tax rates and cost of living; once those factors are accounted for, Texas has the third highest average income (after Virginia and Washington State), while New York ranks 36th.

Of course, it's not just cheap living that draws people to Texas. It's also jobs. In the past 12 months, Texas has added 274,700 new jobs--that's 12% of all jobs added nationwide and 51,000 more than California added. In a Moody's Analytics study, seven of the top 10 cities for projected job growth through 2015 will be in Texas. Four Texas cities topped the list: Austin, McAllen (in the Rio Grande Valley), Houston and Fort Worth. "For the past 22 years, Texas has outgrown the country by a factor of more than 2 to 1," Dallas Federal Reserve president Richard Fisher tells TIME, echoing an April speech in which he laid out the story of Texas growth at some length.

"My uninformed friends usually say, 'But Texas creates low-paying jobs.' To that I respond, You are right. We create more low-paying jobs in Texas than anybody else," Fisher says. "But we also created far more high-paying jobs." In fact, from 2002 to 2011, with 8% of the U.S. population, Texas created nearly one-third of the country's highest-paying jobs.

Prompted by the discussion in the food thread, I was looking up the four tragedies of life(Chinese sayings) as I remember them: 幼年丧母、少年丧父、中年丧妻(偶)、老年丧子(女).

Instead I found this bizarre article. Not to be controversial, but from what I gathered here and there, it might reflect on society today?
