Hi everyone,

Recently, there is a law in Australia promulgating that people should be considering working until the age of 70. This is due to the ageing population is Australia. I suppose in the US, UK and Europe, this does not happen. I can think of multiple health conditions with ageing, e.g. diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, from work as a freelance translator.

In addition, there is the back pain of sitting long hours working as a freelance translator/proofreader/subtitler, etc. and sleepless nights.

I wonder how you can maintain your health for, say, 20 years at least by modifying your lifestyle? I go to the gym regularly, 4-5 times 30 minutes and walk 30-40 minutes 4-5 times each week.

Regards,

Some tips Apr 16, 2014

Drink plenty of water. This will boost your metabolism by 25% and you will need to eat less. Translators drink a lot of coffee and tea. Take a tea spoon of olive oil before drinking same to prevent ulcer and again to make you feel full. Take your proteins from sesame (tahini)-yoghurt combination and eat meat in small amounts only once in 3-4 days. These tips will also furnish you a long life.

My bike is my car. Apr 16, 2014

Therefore I do some training "on the side" every day.

In Germany, the retirement age will soon be 67. Probably I will never fully retire.

Compared to me you are rather active. What else can you do?

That's quite challenging... Apr 16, 2014

Indeed, as freelancers we're the boss of each day's 24 hours and we are able to make perfect routine then work it out... go to the gym, jogging, yoga, even just sitting there for relaxing meditation. These are not tough at all to self-disipline people like you, however, I believe no one could give you a definite answer cause we're living in an uncertain world, eveything is changing from time to time. We do the best we could, then what? we surely get what we want? Even God will think for a momen... See more

In any case, I'd like to make suggestion from the pointview of a faith believer: Be present, enjoy this moment, stay away from attaching to distant dreams as far as you can, the chance to get a healthy 70's might be bigger if you retain those physical excersise as well as these PSYCHOLOGYCollapse

The same way as anybody else with a non-physical job Apr 16, 2014

As translators, we are no worse off than anybody else who doesn't have a physically active job.

As freelancers, we even have the advantage of being masters of our own workday, so it is merely a question of giving priority to living 'the good life', i.e. looking after yourself and not being glued to your computer all day long.

It really isn't all that complicated, is it?

swimming, tea Apr 16, 2014

Swimming, as much as possible, keep every muscle in shape. A liter of green or black tea, on a daily basis, as they are great antioxidants. In a few years, when the use of C-60 diluted in olive oil passes various health inspections and becomes mainstream, we will be comfortable working well past the age of 100.

Treadmill desk? Apr 16, 2014

Eventually will be looking into one of these due to back pain from sitting. Expensive, but also possible to make on your own.

More than exercise Apr 16, 2014

Exercise is important, and so is your diet, but keeping stress and your blood pressure down are equally important. Looking on the bright side, translating is a good exercise for the brain.

Do your best to find peace Apr 16, 2014

I know so many people who keep in perfect shape, lead a balanced life, and have a good diet, but whose health is ruined by the stress caused by internal struggles, long-standing conflicts with other people, and permanent distrust and mourning after events that will naturally happen to anyone in life, like deceit, lost love, costly mistakes, or death of loved ones.

To me, it is absolutely critical to find peace, be fair to other people, settle disputes (or at least try, if the other person wants to treasure the dispute for ages), and be proactively forgetful of all kind of negative and sad events in life. Infirmities of old age shall come sooner or later, but if you can keep a positive attitude about anything life may throw at you, you will at least make the most of your time on this good old valle lacrimarum.

Cheers!

Think about your layout and location Apr 16, 2014

Here are a few tips from someone who has been chained to a desk for a long time:

1. Buy yourself a good office chair, cheap ones aren't worth it.
2. Don't position the mouse on the same side as the number block - you stretch too far and after a couple of decades your shoulder stiffens up - seriously. Learn to use the mouse left-handed if necessary, it's not that difficult.
3. Last, but definitely still important - if possible, find a room with a nice view. For example, I

3. Last, but definitely still important - if possible, find a room with a nice view. For example, I have a beautiful old tree outside my window that looks marvellous against a blue sky. I wince every time the wind breaks a branch off.

BTW, if you find that you talk to yourself, don't worry I think it's normal in our trade!

Switching the mouse is great. My office is facing a bright window where the sun shines in. Because of the solitary nature of the job, I tend to talk a lot at the gym - more than anyone. This is in case I lose my ability to speak after translating too much and vocalise a lot too. Nobody understands why I love the gym so much, it's a chance to socialise too.

I am simply aiming for good quality of life, not longevity. I know that even if C60 works to extend life, but if you're living in pain, or have cancer, migraine, epilepsy, etc., is it worth while? I would only try it when I have no serious medical condition.
