Diploma in Translation Information Needed Aug 30, 2017

Dear Proz members,

I wanted to get this DipTrans certificate nearly 2 years ago and I applied the nearest center (Belfast) for sit-in but then I was told there was not enough candidate (at least 3) to conduct the certification in Turkish language. Is anyone here can tell me where about in UK I should get this exam and where I can get previous exam papers in Turkish. I also want to know if there is anybody lecturing online for DipTrans certificate.

Hello,

This is a question for Shelagh Wilson if possible as I can see you are very knowledgeable on this subject but I of course welcome feedback from anyone else who may be able to help.

Hello,

This is a question for Shelagh Wilson if possible as I can see you are very knowledgeable on this subject but I of course welcome feedback from anyone else who may be able to help.

I have found a small company that I would really like to join and they are keen to have me but I'm slightly nervous that I would not be strictly what they need. My Spanish and English language skills are great and I studied Spanish and linguistics at university with a module in translation. I am fluent in both languages. So my question is, with the above qualification am I good to go as it were?

Can I translate certificates, medical reports etc? As these are the main documents they would need?

My second question is, I also speak Italian, Portuguese and understand Catalan so am I able to translate certificates from these languages to English? And if so would I sign it off the same way with a stamp stating my university degree in Spanish and linguistics or should I just state it is a true copy of the original and sign it and not stamp?

Apologies for the long message but hope you can help.

Many thanks,
Camila

It's actually quite weird to see my "correct" name in print nowadays. I don't hide it for privacy reasons; I just find "Sheila" is so much easier for ESL speakers to deal with . Anyway, thanks for the compliment, Camila, but it isn't actually deserved - I've never practised as a self-employed translator in the UK, so others are far more able to help.

As it happens, I don't see anything different in your situation from the ones we've already discussed here. You should be able to find the information you need from the replies on the first page from Russell Jones, Jack Doughty and Burrell.

I have just seen you have a different name. Did you change your name, Sheila?
I copied and paste a print screen:

Thanks for bringing that to my attention, Katalin. I did play around with my profile a bit at the weekend, although I certainly didn't intend changing my name. ProZ.com have always held "Shelagh", but it isn't the name I want displayed. Maybe a support ticket coming up .

But how was your changed name verified? Mar 21, 2018

Actually this is interesting. Because as far as I know when you change your name, then you cannot have the tick (verified) beside your name till the site staff verifies your name again.

In the setting it says:
"Your identity has been verified previously. Changing the name in your profile will cause the verification to be removed.
If you must change it, please contact support staff before doing so.

http://www.proz.com/support"

So it is a mystery how your name appeared as Shelagh Wilson with a tick (as verified) beside your changed name if you didn't intend to change your name and if you didn't ask your new name to be verified (?)

It's my real name that's verified; in fact that's the only reason it's there at all. If I remember correctly (it was years ago) they used my bank account details, which are in my real name. Sheila as my username, to be shown to everyone. So, no change of verified data. All sorted now.

Thanks for the answer.
Oh, so Sheila is your username.
I don't know whether you know but on your Translators Without Borders' logo you also appear to have 2 names: Shelagh Wilson and Sheila Wilson. I mean on the net there are 2 different logos: one for Shelagh Wilson and one for Sheila Wilson, meanwhile the same logo is opened.

Certified Translator in the UK Jul 2, 2020

As Shelagh/Sheila has pointed out, there isn't an actual process for becoming qualified as a Certified Translator in the UK. My husband, a native French speaker, has had a French translation business for more than 30 years here. He had formal degree-level qualifications from France but also undertook the Post-Graduate Diploma with the Chartered Institute of Linguists some years ago (and passed with merit, unsurprisingly!).

When anyone asks us for a certified translation (whether a French or English client) we provide a simple signed statement verifying its accuracy, on headed paper, including his CIOL candidate number. No client has ever had a problem with this being accepted by any authority (British or French, government or commercial).
NB, I think it's important to recognise that the exam requires you to specialise in certain types of translation - in his case, Scientific and Technical - a general, fluent command of French wouldn't be sufficient.

It's fairly simple to certify your translations for use in the UK Aug 20, 2020

Often ITI, CIOL or ATC membership are required - as is the case with the Passport Office - although for some government departments and other institutions even this isn't necessary, you just need the following, according to this government web page www.gov.uk/certifying-a-document

that it’s a ‘true and accurate translation of the original document’

the full name and contact details of the translator or a representative of the translation company. Our group specialises in doing certified translations for use in the UK.

There's lots of information about it on our website if you want to take a look.
