1) I have agreements with all my clients and they always pay exactly on the due date - so it does not affect my "effort"
2) If I accept a job I just do my best

No, it doesn’t come into play. Once I've accepted a job, it´s my responsibility to give it my best shot, irrespective of payment. I do a lot of pro bono work and I devote the same effort to it as if it was paid work. It is a matter of professional pride, I suppose.

No, but ... Sep 16, 2017

One of my regular clients is now paying within 3 days, and I have to admit it has encouraged me to work faster, if not harder.

I also have to admit that I work harder for my best client, who pays 4 cents more per word than any of the others.

I'm no longer a struggling newby. Nor am I typically grasping by nature or solely motivated by gain. And, thankfully, most of my clients nowadays pay promptly enough for me to be able to pay my bills and meet my other commitments on time. But before I got into full-time translating, I used to work on TEFLA courses for the regional government, and sometimes payment could take over a year to come in, so today I consider myself fortunate.

Maybe, but usually not Sep 16, 2017

I know which clients pay upon delivery (very few), but I have a sort of schedule for my work. As I receive new orders, I organize things, and I usually follow that schedule. But of course if I have a big job and I know the client will pay upon delivery, I might give it a little preference, although this happens like once or twice a year.

It is unpleasant to have to chase clients who pay late or who pay a pittance. So when you have clients who accept a good rate and/or who pay upon receipt of the invoice, you're working with positive energy floating around. Better conditions, better results. Logic. Exactly the same thing here too.

I would put in more effort if I didn't have to remind a client that the payment is way over due every single time.
I have a client who pays me immediately, and you can bet I clear my schedule for him. The problem is he has work for me only once a year.

I tend to only work with people I'm sure will pay. Most direct clients pay within a few weeks, agencies drag their feet a bit but they do pay according to their schedule. I will admit to proofreading more for those who pay more.

once upon a time. Sep 16, 2017

I Used to have a client that ALWAYS paid within 24-48 hrs from delivery. they still have a stellar rep and Blueboard record, but they haven sent me work in several years, no idea why, they never complained about my work, just always paid promptly, were always appreciative.
I will say the pleasure of working with such a professional agency, and so prompt in payment was definitely a motivating factor in giving their projects, special care, priority, and attention.

I have a client who always pays me in no time after I delivered a translation. He was the first client of mine. Never thought it would be very awesome long term collaboration with him. It has been 3 years.

I would absolutely love to get paid immediately upon delivery, but that does not affect the effort I put into a project--I always do my best to produce high-quality work. However, the timing of payments does affect whether I will choose to work with a particular client or agency. Payment two months or more after the delivery of the invoice? No thanks. I'll pass.

No, but it would be nice. Sep 16, 2017

In fact, I kind of like the security of knowing that there's money coming in next month that I've already earned.

The same effort, but... Sep 16, 2017

with much more enthusiasm. After a few cases when I was paid some 4-6 months later only and after so many obstructions, I definitely prefer this way. Of course I do not collaborate with these clients anymore.
