Source text - English The sages often used dualities (two paths, two women, wise and fool, etc.) to call attention to the simple complexity that is one of biblical wisdom's gifts to pedagogy.
Learning to Slow Down
The study of texts is vitally important, but texts are, not ends in themselves, but a means to learning how to steer a path through life. Ultimately what is worth learning is how to live. Too often teachers use texts as a substitute for dealing with life itself. (I've done it myself.) To see reading texts as reading for life, especially in today's mass-media and computerized world, we must slow down our reading (the opposite of what is often recommended) - make it more reflective. Slower reading not only allows us to absorb the many layers of the texts, their richness; it allows time and space for the text to begin to read the reader-learner. It allows time for resonance - time- for a reader to become aware of and explore the ways one text has echoes in another that enrich and enliven the messages of both. Still, being read by a text is more a matter of receptivity (than of time and space), and one is more receptive if one sees that these texts really can and do address our knowing how to live with one another as subjects.
In our contemporary world, we are also misled by two common beliefs (usually enacted, sometimes even verbalized). The first is that religion is different from everyday life. For example, many seem to believe that religion happens in church and education happens in school. (A "separation of church and state" is unimag inable both in biblical times and through most of history.) This emerges innocently enough when, for example, Christians falsely say, "It is time to go to church." In Christian practice, the people are the church. We mislead ourselves by fragmenting life. The second belief is that religion has primarily to do with what you believe, things spiritual, or faith, not external behavior. What is affirmed here is correct, but so is what is denied. Learning to think well can help one live well, but sometimes we act better than we know, and sometimes we use our ignorance as an excuse for not practicing even what we do know. These texts affirm that what is worth learning is worth living, what one lives shows what one has learned.

성서적 가르침이 그러하듯 현자들은 종종 관심을 끌기 위해 교수법에 두 길, 두 여자, 현명한 자와 어리석은 자와 같은 이중성적 대조법을 사용하였다.
천천히 읽기를 학습하는 것
성서 연구는 지극히 중요하지만, 연구 자체에 목적이 있는 것이 아니고 인생을 어떻게 살아갈 것인가를 배울 수 있는 수단이다. 궁극적으로 가치 있는 학습은 어떻게 살아갈 것인가를 배우는 것이다. 선생들은 성서를 삶 자체를 다루기 위한 대용품으로 아주 자주 사용한다. (나 또한 그래왔다.) 특히 오늘날과 같은 대중 매체와 컴퓨터화된 세상에서는 성서를 읽는 것을 삶을 읽는 것으로 보기 위해서는 독서를 천천히 해야 한다. 이는 종종 오늘날 세상이 권장하는 것과 반대되지만, 더 반성적이고 성찰적으로 읽어야 한다. 천천히 읽는 것은 성서 본문의 많은 의미들을 되씹어 그 풍부함을 흡수 할 수 있게 하며, 성서가 독자-학습자를 읽기 시작할 시간과 공간을 허용한다. 즉 독자가 하나의 본문에서 또 다른 본문으로 그 둘 다의 메시지를 풍성하고 생생하게 반응할 수 있는 방법을 깨닫게 되고 탐구할 수 있는 시간인 공명을 위한 시간을 갖게 한다. 성서에 의해 읽혀진다는 것은 시간과 공간보다는 여전히 수용성의 문제인데, 만일 이러한 성서가 주체로서 서로서로 어떻게 함께 살아갈 것인가를 실제로 다루거나, 또 다룰 수 있다는 것을 안다면 사람들은 더 잘 수용할 수 있게 될 것이다.

Source text - Korean 세계적 대유행 전염병의 시초를 B.C. 430년에 아테네에서 시작한 것으로 보며, 가장 많은 희생자를 낸 세계적 대유행 전염병은 1347-1351사이에 퍼진 흑사병으로 예르시니아 페스티스 박테리아 (Yersinia Pestis Bacteria)로 인해 무려 2백만명이라는 희생자를 내었다. 그러한 세계적 대유행 전염병이 역사에 가져온 변화 또한 다양하다. 전쟁에서 패배하게 만들기도 했고, 경제적 환경의 변화로 사회체제가 붕괴되기도 했으며, 종말론적 분위기가 만들어져 기독교가 굉장히 빠르게 전파되기도 했고, 그 전염병이 하나님의 벌로서 믿고 피해자들을 도덕적으로 심판하며 혐오와 차별의 대상으로 만들어 사회적인 희생양으로 만들어 버리기도 했다.

Translation - English The first pandemic is believed to have been in Athens in B.C. 430. The pandemic that resulted in the most casualties, however, was the Black Death (Yersinia Pestis Bacteria), which spread between 1347-1351, killing as many as two million people. The changes that such a global pandemic brought to history are diverse: it led to defeat in war, and the collapse of social systems due to changes in the economic environment. Victims became social scapegoats, objects of hatred, discrimination, and moral judgement, for it was believed that the plague was God’s punishment. Christianity also spread very quickly because of a heightened eschatological atmosphere.
Today, we live in an era of all-encompassing science and technology, in which many people find themselves expelled from the workplace amid the amazing developments in artificial intelligence (AI). The COVID-19 virus, which originated in a developed scientific and technological society, has already resulted in more than 1.1 million confirmed cases worldwide and has killed more than 60,000. The world is in a state of shock and fear in the fight against the coronavirus, a fight characterized by the term “invisible war,” and no knowledge of when it will end. Faced with the reality that neither science nor medicine can predict how many people will be killed before the end of this war, political and economic systems all around the world are collapsing. In a world where it has become impossible to live a normal life, countries are tightening barracks, closing their borders and strengthening social distancing. Around the world restrictions are being increased daily, with instructions such as, “do not even meet with family members,” “stay at home,” “only go outside with permission,” “block borders between countries,” “refuse entry to foreigners,” “close all workplaces except for essential services,” “postpone school openings or close classes,” “offer online lectures and classes,” and “prohibit gatherings at churches and temples” (which are the core of religious life). These regulatory measures cause everyone in the world to feel a sense of psychological atrophy and anxiety, revealing human weakness and limitations. Moreover, Korean churches are deeply embarrassed, for there has been no time in the history of Korean Christianity where they have not offered Sunday worship services or opened church schools on Sundays. An empty chapel seen on a screen during an online worship service thus creates a sense of shame.
