German term

Atlantis

German to English Art/Literary Religion Zen and haiku poetry
This is from a text about the influence of Zen Buddhism on the USA in general and the poets of the Beat Generation, inparticular in the1940's and 50's. This section is aboute ecummings' study of Chinese written characters - ideograms - The term Atlantis seems to mean something like "ideal country live in." Is thiscorrect and is there a better way of putting it?

Atlantis Phil Thanks Phil. Sorry I forgot to add the full quote. I have seen from one of the other replies that Atlantis can mean any mythical or ideal place. I had not seen it used like that before.

Hi Stephen You forgot to provide the context - but even without this, it's hard to imagine why you would translate it as anything other than Atlantis.

Note from asker:
Thanks Wendy. I was aware of the myth of Atlantis and thought it was probably based on history. I did not realise that people used to refer to a lost idealised place though. My bad.
