The authority principle relies on cognitive bias.
We are constantly making decisions: we make thousands a day.
Right now you might be thinking about what to do next, while also deciding how to sit, where to look, and whether to have a sip of coffee.
With all these decisions to make, we can’t give careful thought to every one.
Instead, we make 95% of our decisions using unconscious rules of thumb.
One rule we all use is basing decisions on the behaviour of people in authority.
We learn to obey authority from the moment we’re born, by following the rules set down by our parents and teachers. By the time we’re adults, we’ve learned to trust people in authority almost automatically.
