So your example reads: "according to the rites and ceremonies of the Church of England after banns by me" (I presume you meant "by me" not "after me"). For those who marry in a Church of England service, this is the traditional and preferred procedure. It is still governed by the Marriage Act 1949: either banns, licence or certificate.

The banns are read three times. The old wording was: "If any of you know cause or just impediment why these two persons should not be joined together in Holy Matrimony, ye are to declare it." I remember the priest saying this regularly at Anglican church services when I was a child.

There are many ways of getting married in the UK, and this formula on the marriage certificate is designed to cover all of them.

In the case of a religious ceremony by some denomination other than the Church of England, the same rules apply as for a civil wedding; you notify the registrar in advance and the word "certificate" appears after "by". See the examples in the Home Office document cited in my answer. The last part, "or after ....", will be crossed out, since that is used for banns, which only apply to Church of England marriages.

A Church of England marriage can be by (publication of) banns, by (common) licence, by special licence (issued by the Archbishop of Canterbury), or by (superintendent registrar's) certificate.

In your example, the authority for the wedding was by publication of banns. If it had been by common licence, for example, "licence" would have been entered after "by" and "or after ..." would have been crossed out. But since the priest read the banns in the traditional way, "by ..." is crossed out and "after banns by me" is entered, "me" referring to the priest, who read the banns.

It is obviously a marriage certificate. The wording goes like this:---- Married at St benedict's Church ACCORDING TO THE RITES AND CEREMONIES OF THE - Roman Catholics -BY - Licence BY ME - Fred Bloggs Catholic Priest Jimminy Cricket Deputy Registrar.

If it wasn't in church it states Married in the REGISTER OFFICE BY certifiate before ME Fred Bloggs Registrar Mickey Mouse Deputy Superintendant Registrar.

"Según los ritos y ceremonias" es una fórmula utilizada en español:

En el espacio después de "ceremonies of the" se pone la confesión: the Established (Anglican) Church, the Roman Catholic Church, o la que sea.

Después de "by" se pone "certificate", "special licence", "banns" (amonestaciones): es decir, la autorización por la que se celebra el matrimonio.

Después de "or after" se pone normalmente "banns", o a veces "licence"; es decir, tras haberse leído las amonestaciones por mí"; "por mí" se refiere a la persona que oficia. Si no hay amonestaciones, se tacha.
