I'm considering "rallied together", leaving out "auto convocatoria", but open to suggesting that include it.

English term (edited):
aglutinamos en una auto convocatoria
Selected
gathered for a spontaneous demonstration
Another idea might be "spur-of-the-moment" for "auto", and "assembled" for "aglutinar".
Anyway, that's my two cents worth :)

Or indeed "impromptu" could work for "auto" too. But is perhaps a little too "light", if you know what I mean.

@David: if you happen to see this, I meant "good arguement!" with "GA"!

Another suggestion, grassroots conveying the idea of 'auto' - bottom-up, spontaneous organisation.
'The term implies that the creation of the movement and the group supporting it are natural and spontaneous, highlighting the differences between this and a movement that is orchestrated by traditional power structures.' - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grassroots
And this does sound more like a protest than a demo, though either would probably do.
It's used to describe acts and movements from los indignados to the Tea Party:

By 'it' I mean 'grassroots protest'.

: My only problem with "grassroots" (and I did consider it) is that it comes across as rather wishy-washy somehow, and perhaps a bit too “light” for the context (fatalities under a Coup d'état), if that makes sense… (this, of course, is just my opinion)/GA!

I know what you mean - certain community leaders can use it in a sappy way. But indignados , Tea Party and Arab Spring are also grassroots protest movements: not wishy washy. It's a broad term, and I reckon accurate in this context.

Discussion
Well, my friend Joyce, who's not on Proz but who is a mighty fine linguist and ardent hispanist thinks it needs a few more words - and I always trust Joyce!
