Marina Lara Petersen Sep 28, 2004:
Advice with "c" (noun) - Advise with "s" (verb)
The question is English-English or English-Spanish? You also need the translation?
Octavio Chabl Herrera Sep 28, 2004:
pues depende....advise es "give advice to" (advice con c).

Muchas gracias Oderus
neutral Deborah Workman : Notificar might be an appropriate translation in some contexts, but only where "advise" is misused in English to mean "notify/apprise" rather than "recommend".

En el diccionario COBUILD, muy bueno para este tipo de dudas, se contemplan estas posibilidades:
V n to-inf: The minister advised him to leave as soon...

V n wh: Herbert would surely advise her how to approach the bank

V against n: I would strongly advise against it.

V with quote: Doctors advised that he should be transferred to a private room.
Espero que esto te sirva para decidir...
Peer comment(s):

neutral Deborah Workman : Yes, you are right, as "to make a recommendation". The wide (mis)use to mean "notify/apprise" is in fact incorrect.

Please see the "splanation" below (ha, ha, ha)

So in the first you are asking for the translation "to advise" . That would be "consejar", "asesorar" or "recomendar". "Advising" is "asesoría". Now "Advice" is a "consejo". I hope this clarifies any question you have.

This is how I am understanding the question. If I am off, please let me know.

3 posibilidades

María,

Podríamos decirlo de 3 maneras.

Mi amigo no se encuentra bien y me pregunta que qué le aconsejo.

"I advise going to the doctor" ("advise + gerundio", está claro que me refiero a él, pues se sobreentiende)

"I advise you to go to the doctor" (como dices, "advise + sujeto + to + verbo)

o,

"I advise you go to the doctor" (advise + sujeto + verbo), lo cual "equivaldría" al subjuntivo en castellano. "Te aconsejo que vayas al médico)

Andy
