"Many investors like "averaging-down", which is the buying of more stocks if the market moves down against them. In doing so, they reduce their average price. For example, if I were to buy a stock at $10 and it subsequently fell to $8, then by buying a second batch of stocks at $8 I reduce my average entry price to $9."
