matage

français vers anglais Technique / Génie Industrie aérospatiale / aviation / espace Landing gear door testing
Completely stumped. Have checked the glossaries and looked for google refs but am still not sure what is meant here. This is taken from a document entitled 'Nose landing gear doors - structural substantiation for load cases corresponding to NLG or NLG doors locking system failure' (where NLG = Nose Landing Gear). Here are the references from the text:

'l'articulation centrale a les marges minimums suivantes: m= +1% section XX (ACDG) CFRP limitation en matage. Rappelons que dans ce cas la limitation de la contrainte de matage est volontairement basse et ne conduit pas a une rupture explosive'

Unfortunately, I do not have access to the corresponding drawing!

Clearly a stress test - but what on earth is 'matage' in this context? I am busy searching all technical reference... but if anyone can get there quicker I would be very grateful!

Discussion

Serge F. Vidal Sep 13, 2008:
Matage is peening in aviation I just checked the Dassault Aviation GLossary which gives:
- Matage = peening
- Résistance au matage = bearing strength

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "This turned out to be the term they wanted. And indeed, it does appear to be widely used in aviation. Many thanks to all other answerers (especially the Italian one (?!) - all of which were helpful"

caulking

I don't understand what exactly is going on here, but "matage" can be "caulking", "sealing", and such things. Reference to low stress and absence of explosive failure might suggest that this is the concept involved: if the caulking is weak, a pressure buildup will cause the seal to fail early, preventing a BIG pressure buildup with sudden explosive release of a much higher pressure.

I wonder if the Italian terms given correspond to "calfeutrage", so the same concept?

jagging

I haven't a clue what it means but the reference from a European patent is unequivocal. See para. 7 reference to anti jagging ring (76)

Loading

Matage here implies that plastic deformation is taking place, eg on the beam/spar which is being loaded. Like you, I have been unable to find a directly equivalent word, but I have been able to find a helpful diagram which shows a beam under a distributed load.

Plastic deformation

The matage is a plastic deformation localized material as a result of a clash or a pressure too high

crush

I think it could be crush. These two example sentences seem to me to be talking about the same scenario. But I admit it's inconclusive! Still more googling might find more conclusive examples. Best of luck.

I have since found this definition in a Nantes teaching file on the web: Définition : Matage
Ecrasement localisé de la matière dû à un champ de pression trop élevé dans une zone de contact entre deux pièces. Le matage correspond en général à une déformation plastique.
I think "crush stress" and "crush limit" are what are needed here.
Example sentence:

La clavette est soumise à des contraintes de cisaillement. Un matage (déformation plastique sous l'effet de chocs) peut se produire si les efforts sont trop importants ou si le jeu de montage est trop important.

The safety values for keyway crush and shear stress are typically 13% of the ultimate tensile strength of the material used
