Hi there,

I´m translating a paragraph about the education and early career path of a jeweller. I have no idea what "bijoutière duale" means, and the only Ghit I get for this phrase is from the French article I am currently translating, which makes me think it might be a typo..or perhaps I´m missing something?

Note: the company presenting this award is a luxury watchmaker AND fine jeweller, so I´m wondering if maybe "duale" is related to that...or maybe I´m reading into this too much!

Any ideas or help much appreciated!

Here´s the context:

"Le prix du meilleur joaillier a été décerné à Mlle. Muriel Kouevi. Après un apprentissage de dessinatrice d'intérieur au CFP AA, et une maturité professionnelle artistique entre 2002 et 2005, elle s’est dirigée vers l’Ecole Supérieure des Beaux-Arts avant d’entrer en apprentissage chez M. @Clare American spell check? I note that you are spelling "jewellery" and "programme" the UK way. It's good to see that I am, apparently, not the only one who writes with UK spelling and (if required by the client) later runs a spell check to change it.

How about "prior to commencing a jewellery apprenticeship with Alain Hirt combined with a programme of study." (also avoids repeating the "apprentice" part so reads better in English).

JL01 and BD Finch I think it´s necessary to figure out how to render "dual" into English in some way. I consider it part of producing a faithful translation, rather than torture, but some may disagree!
BD Finch - I see we think alike on this matter :-) I think you have hit the nail on the head...only issue now is that I forgot to mention that this text has to be American English and "sandwich course" appears to be UK English primarily...

@JL01 It is hardly "torturing oneself" to provide a full translation of the source term! "Apprentice" on its own would be a failure to translate "duale" and, thus, a translation error.

Is it really relevant here to torture oneself to find a translation explaining that "dual" means that someone is part-time apprenticing and part-time in school?? WOuldn't simply "apprentice" be sufficient?

@DLyons See the note that I have just added to my explanation. If you google "apprenti dual", you will find plenty of examples for various disciplines. The source text is awkwardly phrased.

But shouldn't it really be «apprentissage dual» ? (i.e. M rather than F).

OK, I see what you´re saying, but Muriel did the apprenticeship with Alain Hirt, not Piaget, so possibly she would have worked only in those areas that Alain Hirt focuses on...

DLyons I thought the same but now I´m not sure... I´ve done more googling and found Alain Hirt the jeweller. This is the company description: "Fabrication, transformation et création de bijoux en matières précieuses." i.e. seems to be jewellery only, no watches...as yet I get no hits for things like "Alain Hirt horlogerie"....

I think that there might not be a US term for "sandwich course". Perhaps combined academic studies and internship or something similar?
