Leather goods: luggage
"Le ferrage consiste dans la pose des serrures, coins, boucles et poignées."
Same context; I'm not sure how to translate it correctly here. The ProZ glossary gives "joining" but that doesn't sound right here - or am I making life too difficult for myself?

Selected
metal fittings
The Porsche Design TwinBag is one of the most exclusive bags around this season. Premium quality was a key focus in the selection of materials. The leather is tanned using an ecological process, the lining is made from soft Alcantara and the metal fittings are finished using an elaborate electroplating procedure. After vegetable tanning, the selected leather varieties – exclusive ostrich leather, elegant crocodile leather and modern calf leather – are processed with the highest precision and utmost attention to quality. An elaborate electroplating process is used to produce six different finishes for the timeless metal fittings which are then polished by hand. The fittings are made from precious metals, such as gold, white gold, rose gold, matt gold, silver and chrome.

Asprey introduces the Asprey Londoner Luggage collection, manufactured in England by Globe-Trotter. Luxury and durability meet in this five-piece collection of beautifully practical suitcases and trolleys. Bruce Hoeksema, Asprey’s newly appointed creative director, has designed every detail and aspect of this luggage collection, from colour and finish to selecting the metals used on the fittings. The size and shape of the rivets and nails were thought through as well as the signature Asprey lock that fastens all Asprey leather products. All the cases are lined with chic durable hemp linen with a leather hand stamped Asprey label. The hand stitched crocodile corners are chosen to match the classic stripe of the removable webbed luggage straps that secure the suitcases. The moulded vulcan fibreboard, used by Globe-Trotter over 100 years, creates an extraordinary strong structure while the metallic finish of the exterior give the pieces a modern sheen.

Well, you could go with 'Applying / the application of metal fittings' or similar for your heading. I translate texts on the decorative arts constantly due to my training, and I do think you are searching in vain.

Note from asker:
The thing is, they are really talking about the processes that go into the making of luggage and I really don't see how I can get away with a noun phrase here. |
This is also a section title in a list of the stages of luggage making: I simply can't rephrase that. In fact, my own first attempt was "metal fitting", until I went a bit further and discovered the sentence I gave as context. In any case, many thanks for your input. |
Thanks - that's really helpful. |

: I think "application/applying" is the wrong verb here and does not describe the process of fixing/at all well. (You "apply" cream). It's clear from your own 2nd link above and in pictures of high-end cases that rivets are used//well, have to disagree

I routinely translate in this arena, and I can assure you that it is the right verb./See, for instance, the link I have just added to my answer./Well, I have years of experience of this type of translation, but I don't have the time to convince you alone.

metal hardware
When I searched online for your previous term (enchape), I came across "metal hardware" for bag-making etc...
Incidentally re. enchape, did find "metal/leather/fabric tabs"

brass
Leather luggage of this type almost always has brass (or at least brass-plated) metalwork, which sets off the (usually brown or dark cream) leather very well.
If that is the case with the high-end line that you are describing, how about going beyond the literal and over-the-top with something like "The luxurious leather is enhanced by brass[-plated] hinges, corners, buckles and handles" ?

After all, the "ferrage" on such luxury items is very rarely (and literally) made of iron.

Yeah, Phil, it *could* be any metal, but my guess is, if it is High-End, Luxury Luggage, it ain't made out of aluminum. My bet's on Brass.

: This is a term used, for instance, in the application of metal to glassware or when metal is incorporated into another material. Not for the application of metal fittings to luggage, for instance.

Rivets are used to fix these metal corners/hinges/handles to the luggage so I think "riveting" and/or "fixing" are the most appropriate verbs to use here. Or perhaps "AFFIXING or "ATTACHING" or even "mounting" but "fitting or "applying" just don't work imo as they don't really describe the process involved.
"Riveting" remains my first choice

: Except the FR word for to rivet is not used by the author. There are a variety of ways in which metal fittings are applied to such luxury goods, and the language of the decorative arts in very often used to signal such luxury, hence my suggestions./It is.

well "Apply" is not correct imo for a fixing process...
