French term

crosiement de ponts

French to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks
In a document about 4WD vehicles:

This doesn't seem to have anything to do with bridges

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Y9IjjAXag0 shows an example.

I'm thinking of something like "gully crossing", but that doesn't get the same type of hits.

Discussion

christian landais Jun 13, 2007:
When two "wheel axles" (your ponts) cross one of those "saignées" could they be be seen as an "X" whose branches are separated by the distance of front-to-aft wheel centers. You do mean "croisement de ponts", obviously not "crosiement"
Charles Hawtrey (X) Jun 13, 2007:
I should have said "diagonally opposed wheels"
Charles Hawtrey (X) Jun 13, 2007:
I suppose you could simply say '"opposite axles" and rephrase to suit
Charles Hawtrey (X) Jun 13, 2007:
"pont" in this case is "axle". 'croisement' here is not directly related; it refers to e.g. the front left and rear right wheels being in contact with the ground, but the opposite pair having no contact if the suspension travel is insufficient

cross-axled

Approach ditches or mounds at an angle to allow each wheel to tackle the obstacle individually, making the best use of the available ground clearance. Note that if the obstacle is too severe, it can cause the vehicle to become CROSS-AXLED, with the diagonally opposite wheels coming clear off the ground, resulting in no drive, the necessity of a tow or a long walk home. This is one occasion where the axle differential locks come into their own; as they put power to the two wheels that still have traction.
