French term

l'inverseur

French to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks generators
This appears in a a request for proposals to provide preventive maintenance services for emergency generators, in the section that details the anuual inspections to be carried out on the engines:

Effectuer la lubrification à toutes les endroits qui le requièrent, soit sur le groupe électrogène,
***l’inverseur****ou les accessoires.

The GDT gives reversing device as a possible translation, but as I'm not sure, I would appreciate any input.

Discussion

Michael Davies Feb 20, 2009:
inverseur - inverter I think it is quite likely that the device is an 'inverter' (used, as Terry quite rightly points out to convert DC to AC). I believe that larger power inverters can use moving parts - as in a DC motor - to produce Alternating Current / Voltage output.
chris collister Feb 19, 2009:
inverter? My thoughts exactly. However, if the output is DC, not AC, then a mechanical switch (which may require lubrication) may be used to change polarity - although I have never come across such a thing.
Terry Richards Feb 19, 2009:
Could be an inverter. Which is a device for converting DC from a DC generator to AC. However, I've never heard of one with any moving parts so why it would require lubrication is a mystery to me.

agree Adsion Liu : inverter often in electronic/electric area, and reverse switch for machinery or vehicles...

Thank you.
neutral Terry Richards : But they are completely different devices and I don't think either one would need lubrication (see discussion).
