Chris I couldn't agree more with you and I love the way you put poetry in "ce monde de brutes"!
chris collister Jun 25, 2009:
carputer..... Hi Charles, language is a dynamic thing and I don't have a problem with genuine neologisms like transistor or transputer (remember them?), but it's the ghastly mongrels like webinar and carputer which, it is hoped, will eventually be carried away on the sewer of time to be dumped in the Marianas Trench of eternal oblivion...
Charles Hawtrey (X) Jun 24, 2009:
Carputer Sorry, Chris, but
"Carputer refers to any computing platform that is installed in a vehicle. While some aftermarket carputers are available to consumers, most carputers are built by enthusiasts using desktop PC components from smaller form factors like the mini-ITX or microATX. Carputers are mainly used for playing music and DVD movies, connecting to the Internet, and navigation. Carputer may also be called Car PC."
(http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/C/carputer.html. I found it in onelook.com. But there was no hard-covered book that included it.)
Omar Lima Quintana Jun 24, 2009:
It looks alike. Same source.
Linda Brunet Jun 24, 2009:
Guess I was just agreeing with you then? ;>)

On-board computer?

I'm not sure I understand your query: do you want an explanation/definition of the term "auto PC" alone, or are you looking for explanation about the rest of the list? If the latter, BAS stands for "Brake Assist System" (or the German equivalent, unpronounceable), CVT stands for "Continuously Variable Transmission", Boîte automatique means, well, Automatic Gearbox, etc... Are you translating from French to English, or the other way round?
Note from asker:
I am translating Fr - En (as posted?) and I only want the translation for AutoPC:-)

self-levelling

Given that the heading is "allumage de phares automatique", this would have to be related to headlights. The modern xenon beams are so intense and pencil-like that they are fitted with a servo-driven level control to compensate for bumps in the road.
I suggest (with low confidence) that "PC" here means "pente-contrôle". But then again, who knows...?

Ah, so "allumage des phares automatique" isn't a heading? Should the blank line not be there at all? Then it all makes perfect sense: nothing to do with self-levelling at all!
I very much hope that the word "carputer" never gets so much as a sniff at the OED. Yeuch!
