French term

éclairage statique d'intersection

French to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks
In a list of features for a new car. No explanation within the document, no bilingual references found. I haven't been able to guess the English equivalent by skimming through the iffy explanations I've found on French car forums.

I do have one other instance here:

British English, please.

Thanks for any insight!

static turning light

As opposed to a "dynamic (swivelling) cornering light".

Read from "Combining the high-tech MMI system ..." here:
http://www.leftlanenews.com/audi-a8.html

The Audi A8 looks out on the world through newly designed headlights – with xenon plus units and the innovative full LED headlights, a technology Audi was the first to introduce worldwide in the R8 high-performance sports car. The adaptive light system augments the xenon plus units – it controls THE SWIVELING MODULES [this is different] so that they always provide the perfect lighting for intersections, the city, country roads and highways. The new all-weather light integrated into the headlights replaces the fog lights. Their traditional location in the air intakes is now occupied by the radar sensors of the optional adaptive cruise controlwith stop & go function.
A technological breakthrough from Audi is the networking of the headlight control unit with the optional MMI navigation plus. The navigation system analyzes the route ahead and relays the data to the light computer to activate highway lighting with its extended range while still on the ramp to the highway, for example. BEFORE ENTERING AN INTERSECTION, THE SYSTEM ACTIVATES THE CORNERING LIGHT, which provides wider-angle illumination and thus enhances safety

It's called a STATIC TURNING LIGHT here, in the section on "Lights" on page 80:
http://www.audi.se/etc/medialib/ngw/se/pdf___filer.Par.0007....

The light is switched on when the indicator is activated. It is thus different from the "dynamic cornering light" which swivels as the steering wheel is turned.

I guess the system turns off above a certain speed since it's considered you don't need this lighting for overtaking or motorway lane-changing.

BTW, the procedure used in finding the above was as follows (as indicated by the refs quoted):
1) find a website with the problem term, ideally with the name of a car manufacturer using the system;
2) search for that manufacturers name with keywords lights, car, intersection;
3) within the relevant-looking hits that come up, look for pertinent information (use CTRL+F to find words; anyone who uses the Web and CTRL+F (loads of people don't know about it) can pretty much dispense with ProZ!)
4) Having found a likely translation, confirm by websearching that expression.

Step 1) also helps you find out more about the problem term, in this case precisely what the éclairage statique d'intersection is, how it works, etc., so that you will know when you come across the corresponding situation in English, or to help you target relevant search words in English.
