Discussion

Emma Grubb Dec 15, 2006:
Just a note to confirm that "prior art" is indeed the correct translation for this. If anyone is still in doubt, I have a glossary supplied by the WIPO and will be happy to supply a copy on request.
Karen Tkaczyk Dec 14, 2006:
You chose the wrong answer in my opinion. 'Prior art' and 'state of the art'
are both set expresssions in patents. You'll need both.

disagree df49f (X) : no, this would be "art antérieur" - standard phrase in patent jargon, not-to-be-invented or approximate and an essential prior knowledge for anyone translating patents

state of the art/anterior art

On parle souvent de "art" dans le domaine du brevet (en français aussi, mais moins).

Bon, après, je ne sais pas si je suis plus qualifié pour tourner la phrase anglaise correctement, mais quelque chose du genre "after a review of the state of the art" ou "after a study of anterior art" devrait marcher.
