The phrase seems to refer to when a production tours at another theatre, possible a 'work in progress'?

Thanks all. After doing a final read-through it is clear that this refers to the Director rather than the play, so I have used 'period of work'.

cc If you read the wider context, it's someone's biography, and I take it to mean that he spent time working in those two places. A play can't "travailler".

When I Googled this to get more context, I found what I assume is the text you're translating. It refers to an artist, not a play, and if I understand it correctly, he appeared in the play after spending periods working (étapes de travail) in Bulgaria and Berlin.

I keep feeling that something is not quite right, after rereading about this play, I think it should be:

"... after few stints working on it [the play] in Bulgaria and in Berlin"

The time he spent in Bulgaria and in Berlin wouldn't be mentioned if there wasn't some connection with this play.

There are many ways to refer to such performance stops. These would include--from more formal to less formal--engagements, performances, stagings, working stops, gigs, and more. Or you could say "after performance stops in Bulgaria and Berlin." The choices are practically endless. But they refer to working stages in the journey of the traveling production, not to the person's other work opportunities.
