vitre

français vers anglais Technique / Génie Ordinateurs : logiciels ASP.NET programming
This comes in a set of company guidelines for programmers writing code for ASP/ASP.NET pages. Having said that debugging logs (trace de débogage) are forbidden , it goes on:
Seules les traces d'erreur sont permises sous forme de "vitres" ou de traces applicatives (cf chapitres dédiés).

Note the " " are not mine, they are used in the document, suggesting this is company jargon.

Other examples are:

Discussion

Simon Cole (asker) Mar 10, 2011:
Pane-ful ! Seems to me that "pane" is appropriate. The examples I gave include reference to errors and crashing of the system. I can also confirm that the IT development group producing this material are based in France and all source material is drafted in French, not just manuals and guidelines, but also coding and GUI development.
Lara Barnett Mar 9, 2011:
Ask Do ask, but it could be translated badly from an original. Somebody may have used "vitre" for window. So ask also if it was translated from another language - you never know.
Neil Coffey Mar 9, 2011:
Ask...! Doesn't seem like a normal use of "vitre".

The word "vitre" can be a translation of "pane" (= a subsection or layer of a window), but I'm not sure that fits the context. There is such a thing as an "error pane", but not sure if it actually fits what they mean.
cc in nyc Mar 9, 2011:
May need to ask... ...if these "vitres" are pop-ups, screen shots, breadcrumbs, traces, dumps, etc.
Lara Barnett Mar 9, 2011:
Yes, windows is translated as "fenêtre". There is an alternative to this - as I have suggested below.
Simon Cole (asker) Mar 9, 2011:
windows - no these developers use 'fenêtre' when they mean "window". I have included all references from the document in my context. There are also web-links in the document to the company's development server, but they are https with no access for me. Any hackers out there?
Lara Barnett Mar 9, 2011:
"windows" Maybe its in "" marks because they actually mean windows but are trying to be clever and use "vitres".
cc in nyc Mar 9, 2011:
chapitres dédiés Is it possible to consult the chapitres dédiés for clues about the "vitres" ou traces applicatives?

@ philgoddard – The term "windows" is already taken, so IMO wouldn't suit this special jargon.
philgoddard Mar 9, 2011:
If it's company jargon, you can call it what you like in English within reason, so what's wrong with "windows"?

Pane

"vitre" can refer to a "pane" of glass. This expression is also commonly used when talking about window type boxes/pages in certain applications.
Example sentence:

"...The middle PANE labeled DirectX Features should show that DirectDraw Acceleration, Direct3D Acceleration and AGP Texture Acceleration are all Enabled. There are two tests that can be run under this tab, each with their own button in the middle PANE.."

"The Overview PANE on the Dashboard is your starting point for using System Mechanic ..."

Peer comment(s):

neutral cc in nyc : Quite possible, though I beleive "volet" is used for "pane." see: http://www.microsoft.com/Language/en-us/Search.aspx?sString=... And it still would be nice to know what they mean by "vitre" to begin with.
