The question may seem obvious to some, but "auto protégé" is a term bandied about a lot without being very well defined. In the context of a roof covering, this appears to refer simply to a layer of gravel on tar. "Self-protective/ing" seems rather tautologous, unless there is some cunning new material I don't know about which is "self-healing". Any building experts out there?

Pinching Kashew's example (naughty I know, but it is useful), see the reference below, where the English website doesn't bother with any "auto", "self" or what-have-you for, I believe, the simple reason that it would be redundant and confusing. So, am I accusing the French author of your text of writing something redundant and confusing? To be utterly honest: yes.
Stone chippings on roof covering protect against sunlight. The roof covering below the stone chippings protects the roof from rain and snow, the adhesive layer protects the roof covering against lifting off and blowing away. It seems too obvious, but a roof covering is there to protect the building against the weather, helicopter landings, etc. One can repeat something too much.
However, if the roll of roof covering didn't incorporate stone chippings to the top surface, it would have to be protected by application of either solar-reflective paint or a layer of gravel/stone chippings (the latter would risk puncturing the membrane).
