français term

conciergerie

français vers anglais Autre Enseignement / pédagogie
Does this mean "superintendent's office", when speaking about an educational institution? If so, then what is "le responsable de la conciergerie"?

Dans le cas particulier des items utilisés dans l’entretien régulier par le ---, le responsable de la conciergerie détermine les quantités à acheter selon une évaluation visuelle des stocks.

Gayle, exactly - that is why I was confused when I found "superintendent's office". Thanks very much.
Non-ProZ.com Apr 19, 2005:
Sarahl, I agree with you, that's why I think that janitor IS along the right track, though I'm wondering if this person might actually be someone higher in the custodial department or something, or like a Facilities Manager. What do you think?

caretaker brings to mind health to my US-trained ears.

I guess I should have then specified that this is Canadian French to be translated into American English. Although the comments regarding UK English are certainly interesting, they do not apply in this context. Sorry that i did not specify that before. Now, is "caretaker's office" something used in the U.S.? To me, "janitor" doesnt' seem to be the correct person, either, though it's along the right track, of course. Thanks for both responses.
Non-ProZ.com Apr 19, 2005:
The janitor determines the quantities to purchase?

Selected

custodian's office (or more elegantly) custodial services

"Responsable de la conciergerie" would be head custodian.

Superintendent's office is sometimes used as well, but in US educational systems, a School superintendent oversees several schools, and not for custodial work!

agree Elena Petelos : :-))) ...porter for us ;-)))/porters do pretty much everything sokolatenia, although we tend to have cleaners for cleaning. In the Uni's Halls of Residence (campus+forest), we had porter's lodge ;-) http://www.translationdirectory.com/article293.htm

neutral Gayle Wallimann : Caretaker in the US is someone who takes care of grounds, gardens. It makes me think of the caretaker of a cemetery.
