I'm not really sure which translation to go with here. It's a small device that drives through ventilation ducts with a camera on it, wired back to the control unit, and with a brush on it for cleaning. It looks something like what is used on the NASA Mars missions...

see link where "chariot" is used in both languages in the context of a camera

cart
Think of small cart.

I think this would be the best, most natural solution here - there will be no doubt as to what you are referring, whereas 'chariot', 'cart' and any other more literal translations may lead the reader to think they've missed something.

robot
Why, it's our friendly neighbourhood duct-cleaning robot!

I understand your objection, but you are referring to an "autonomous" duct-cleaning robot. Plenty of duct-cleaning robots are controlled by joysticks; see for example

Note from asker:
I'm afraid I have to disagree with "robot". It's 100% human controlled through joysticks on the control unit. Robot suggests some automation. It *looks* something like the thing on the Mars mission, but the technology is obviously different :-P |

: "chariot" doesn't imply any intelligence. It may certainly have intelligence upstream of the wires, but I would prefer to translate the word as it is, rather than as I might wish it to be. Something neutral like carriage or trolley. Oilmen call them pigs!

pig
I kid you not: the thing used to clean inside large-diameter pipes of all kinds is called a 'pig'.
Of course, mfrs of equipment for cleaning *air ducts* might well choose to avoid the term for their application.<g>
