This is in a "fiche d'application" for plasma torch (or arc) depositions that includes sections on "equipment and materials"; "operating conditions"; and "quality control" for example.
I understand that the "éprouvette" is a sample workpiece, but am lost as to how to translate "de suivi de moyen"... something like "sample workpiece for monitoring the means" seems rather cumbersome (if "moyen" is indeed meant in this sense rather than "average").
Any help greatly appreciated. Sorry that the term does not appear in any sentence that would shed greater light on its meaning.

I agree that it's hard to make it succinct. "Monitoring" is very cumbersome. I feel sure that "moyen" refers to the equipment used to make the plasma deposition rather than to the material. Again, "equipment" is cumbersome, and "tool" is maybe too general; hence, since it's a plasma torch, why not call it a torch?
The idea is that the performance of the kit needs to be monitored fairly continuously, and any deviation will show up in the éprouvette.

I like "follow-up" and "test piece" but think the "moyen" encompasses the broader process - including the powder used (grain size etc.), the substrate on which it is sprayed (and how it has been prepared) to provide an overall result, which is judged to be successful based on the porosity of the (in this case metal) coating, absence of delamination etc. - as opposed to a "torch test" which checks that the torch is in working order...still in doubt as to the translation of this last word! |

I would hope to receive their document dedicated to this test piece in order to ascertain the accurate translation. In the mean time, I will also say that the main reason I chose "process" over "for the torch" is because "torch test" is separately covered by another term "essai de torche"... "
