I call this the paragraph from hell. I'm getting lost in the wordiness of it. Has the uneven-aged forest been affected by fire or not?? Am I on the right track if I say "... there is an uneven-aged forest whose longevity goes beyond the period of fire cycles..." or "... whose longevity has surpassed the period of fire cycles..." Or is it the opposite???
Épargnées par le feu depuis des siècles, plusieurs îles centrales du grand lac Naococane présentent elles aussi des peuplements forestiers particuliers. Comme le mécanisme de régénération naturelle de la pessière noire ne peut avoir lieu, on constate alors la présence d’une forêt inéquienne dont la longévité est dépassée par la période de rotation des feux et qui ne se régénère que par marcottage, laissant place ainsi à une recrudescence du sapin baumier qui y pousse en abondance. Mentionnons qu’une telle composition forestière ne se retrouve plus guère au nord de cette latitude, avoisinant le Nunavik.

it is saying that there has not been any of those fires in this forest..that would have regenerated it naturally..and therfore is has only had new growth through marcottage...what is that? I assume that is what they call "selective logging"...right?
Does it make sense to you now?
uneven-age forest is, I think, in this collocations: old growth, new growth, mixed-growth or mixed-age growth
I mean I always here: old growth forest so from that I deduce, new growth and mixed-growth.....meaning old and new...

Pina....,FYI, this is the politics on this: forest managers have said for a while, that limited fires in forests are good because they spark new growth and regeneration of the fire....the \"brush\" fires can get rid of undergrowth and help a forest to revive...
In the USA, there is now a call for setting these fires, believe it or not...
though there is not academic agreement on the efficacy of these techniques, there is consensus that some fires do regenerate forests...

in which the fire cycle exceeds stand longevity
ie the long fire cycle (possibly several hundred years)allows regeneration/propagation to occur through layering - shoots and branches take root while still attached to the parent.

: I am sorry but this just make sense to me..I don;t see the idea explained..wrong way round..in the logic even though the French seems to saying this: whose longevity is beyond the fire cyucle..ie has not been interrupted

fire cycle = fire-return interval (time between two sucessive fires over a specfied area); stand = growth/trees in the area/forest. Hope that helps!
