French term

Galets et graviers lavés

French to English Science Geology
In a list of strata in a geoogical report.

In this context, does "lavé" mean that the stones are pale coloured, or that they have pehaps been eroded by the water? Or does it mean something completely different? I don't seem to be able to find anything conclusive.

Any suggestions much appreciated!

Discussion

Guy Bray Apr 9, 2010:
I agree with "washed", though you could say "water-washed". The implication is that the fines have been removed. Since it says "galets et graviers..." the implicatioin is that the galets are large, for which you should say "cobbles" (2-64 mm: smaller than boulders, larger than pebbles).
B D Finch Apr 9, 2010:
galets Galets were used a lot around here for building houses and they were certainly not pebbles but large stones from river beds generally flat and with the edges rounded by erosion. However, "lavée" is about the galets and gravel having been washed.

washed pebbles and gravel

'Washed gravel' was given in the reference below for 'gravier lavé'.

However, it is in a landscaping book, so not the same context.

Water-worn pebbles and gravel

I think for a geological report, this would be a more appropriate term, and quite possibly what is meant here.
