grounded in
As in "hopes that are equally grounded in reality".
One option, and an alternative to "rooted in"; I feel "grounded" gives it the feeling of stability they're probably looking for.

number of hits for each phrase
My first reaction to this question was that I would probably say 'based in reality.' Then, out of curiosity, I looked to see how often each of these phrases was used on Yahoo! (and is posted below). I was surprised to see that 'grounded in reality' is the phrase used most often. Anyway, it is up to the translator to interpret the data and make his or her own choice based on the text. :-)
1 - 10 of 1,110,000 for "grounded in reality"
1 - 10 of 673,000 for "based in reality"
1 - 10 of 270,000 for "rooted in reality"
1 - 10 of 33,000 for "anchored in reality"
