In a list of "discrete event system" techniques for treating stats, "réseaux bayesiens, automates temporisés, réseaux de Petri". I've found "delay automaton", and am wondering if that's the correct term. Any ideas??

Gets lots of google hits, also in conjunction with Petri nets and Bayesian filters, and there are a few bilingual documents if you google it with 'automate'.

Educated guesswork. "Automate", commonly so shortened from "automate programmable", is generally a Programmable Logic Controller, and I imagine "temporisé" means not that it runs for a predetermined time ("timed") but that it runs some time after the events referred to, i.e. it is not processing in real time.

Les automates programmables sont apparus aux USA vers 1969, ils étaient destinés à l'origine à automatiser les chaînes de montages automobiles. C'est en 1971 Qu'ils firent leur apparition en France, ils sont de plus en plus employés dans toutes les industries.
ROLE ET EMPLOI
Comme son nom l'indique c'est un appareil que l'on programme pour effectuer des opérations cycliques, il reçoit des données par ses entrées, celles-ci sont ensuite traitées par un programme défini, le résultat obtenu étant délivré par ses sorties.
NOTA
Il ne faut pas confondre automate programmable et micro ordinateur, ces derniers bien que de plus en plus puissants sont plutôt réservés aux calculs et graphismes, ils peuvent néanmoins commander des appareillages par adjonction de cartes spécifiques dites Entrées/Sorties, mais ils ne sont pas aussi souples d'emploi que les A.P.I. spécialement étudiés pour un emploi bien spécifique.
