French term

visualisation légère

French to English Tech/Engineering IT (Information Technology)
This is from a list of features of a secured sharing solution for PC tablets. Documents are encrypted before being sent and then require a password to be viewed.

"Une application de visualisation légère installée sur les terminaux".

I have asked the client for more details and this was the answer I received, "nous voulons dire que le programme installé sur le terminal ne permet que de visualiser les documents et qu’il n’utilise pas beaucoup de ressource lors de son fonctionnement".

Okay, so far so good, except that I can't seem to find any convincing equivalent in English. "Light viewing application" just doesn't seem clear to me.

Discussion

Tony M Mar 23, 2012:
Parsing I think your parsing is not helping: it is the 'application' that is 'légère', not the 'visualisation'

Lots of s/w in EN has a 'lite' version for this sort of purpose; however, I'd advise against using 'lite' as a general adjective in this instance.

slimmed-down viewer

Or even just 'viewer', cf. for example the PowerPoint viewer from Microsoft. The fact that it is called a 'viewer' usually implies that is all it does, and hence will be less resource-hungry than the full version of the equivalent s/w.

Of course, if you can use the actual name of your specific piece of s/w, you might always call it the "XYZ Lite viewer"

thin viewer

An alternative to the other answer - using the thin/thick client analogy (nothing to do with their body shape or intelligence).

The thin viewer can view most document types. The thin viewer converts documents on the server into forms that can be viewed in a browser

slight display / or slight visualization.

Due to the context this's my suggestion.
Happy translation to all.

The important as see ,is explain how it wouldn't works.Unfortunately this is what you don't did..
Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : 'slight' wouldn't really work in this sort of usage in EN. / 'display' wouldn't really work here on its own ('afficheur' or 'affichage'), but 'display application' might work / 'slight' has the sense of 'menu' (pas gros) or 'faible', not light (pas lourd)

the main thing as i see is to explain how it wouldn't works. But unfortunately you didn't do.And "display" fits well the context.
