I am confused as "empreintes digitales" and "traces digitales" are synonyms. So why has it been twice? Comparison of fingerprints and palm prints and fingerprints and palm prints doesn't make sense.

"On parle de traces ou d’empreintes , deux termes qui n’ont pas la même signification pour les policiers scientifiques.
La trace est la marque, visible ou invisible, laissée par les crêtes papillaires sur un support. Lorsqu’un malfaiteur manipule un objet sur les lieux d’un délit ou d’un crime, il peut laisser des traces digitales (doigts) ou palmaires (paumes).
L’empreinte est le résultat de l’apposition complète des crêtes papillaires après encrage de celles-ci. Les empreintes d’un délinquant sont prélevées lors des opérations de signalisation effectuées dans les locaux de police."

Well, although it is not very technical, this could be one way round it. I'd recommend doing some research yourself on sites discussing forensics, I feel sure you'll find the two terms you need there!
