carry out needs specific to your tax situation
Hello,
I would say "specific tax situation" for "personnalisées" sound it sounds more like natural English. I would avoid "individualized" or "personalized".
démarches = steps = needs specific (get help, file, etc)
I hope this helps.

Note from asker:
Thanks Matthew, though I have followed your answer with little amendment as I like to use procedures. |

: it's along the right lines, but you "have needs" (or not) you don't "carry out needs"; maybe "carry out steps"?

Thank you. You can say that. Why not? For some reason, I am not comfortable with "steps" here. Imho, they mean "steps" in the sense of "your tax needs". Maybe "carry out your personal tax needs". The French is being quite vague here (not just queries).

update your personal situation
rather far from your original perhaps... I had a look on British Inland revenue site, and they list all the things you can do, but do not give a title for it
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk
and I just wondered if 'update' might just take in "démarches" (like applying for tax relief, or changing your method of payment...)

: You can check out all sorts of information about your tax situation without updating it. A "démarche" is something that you do, that you undertake, a procedure. It might involve/include update, but it is not a synonym for it.//More familiar style for UK!

indeed, Nikki.. hence my low confidence rating. The UK Inland Revenue site, for what could be "démarche" is headed "I want to...." and you click on the appropriate thing. Is this the 'classic' case of the French having a word for it .. (and not us)?!

: "update your personal situation" is one thing you could do when you do a "démarche personnalisée", but it's not a "démarche personnalisée" in itself. You could also do it by a "démarche personnelle"

customized procedures
A suggestion.

Nikki's answer includes the term 'tax'. I could have suggested 'customized tax procedures', but it is tax related anyway, so I don't think it's useful to add it here.. However there are quite a few hits on the Internet with 'tax procedures', like Katsy said..

: I like procedures and agree that tax/taxation is hardly necessary in context. Customized is fine for a car but for procedures with tax, I am a little unsure.

You are probably right, and I do think that 'personalized' would suit better in this context.

: 'customized tax procedures'? everyone is equal in law so there shouldn't be any "customised" tax procedures...

You've got a point here. However that's what the French text says, the "démarches" can be customized/personalized online... These procedures are set, but you can choose the ones that fit with your situation.

"démarches personnalisées" seems to mean the online equivalent of "démarche personnelle" i.e. the computer at other end know who is connected, i.e. deals with a named individual, not with a member of the public in general.
"We will answer individual queries from taxpayers." (http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/downloadFile...

: Nikki is right here, "queries" are only part of all the procedures you can do.. I would keep the term 'procedure' for 'démarche' here.. Also 'individual procedure' sounds quite good too.

as I understood it "queries" is here used in the meaning of "whatever you need/want to talk about" with the tax office, be it a general question or anything related to your case. Going back to “contact in person” [=non-anonymous] – online version

personalized tax procedures
I like "procedures" here for "démarches". It accurately describes what this is about : who, what, where, when and how for anything relating to taxation.
The "personalisé" idea just means about oneself.
Including the word "taxation" or "tax" may not be necessary.
Not sure that this turn of phrase has much of a ring to it but never mind. This phrase appears on income tax return forms. Here's an example. Quite worrying acutally. Found this on the internet; it is recent and looks real. If the person exists, does she realize her tax return is accessible?

I also think the "personalized" thing sounds odd but it is there in the original.
Maybe "your tax procedures" might take care of the individual, personalized idea.

Sur place : Votre centre des finances publiques, pour obtenir les renseignements et documents fiscaux, effectuer vos réclamations et poser toutes vos questions sur le paiement ou sur le montant de votre impôt."
It is rather specifically relating to things such as filling in your tax returns online, making modifications to your situation.
I read the "personalized" idea as being "your". I agree that "individualized" is more natural in English for this. However, it is not really in relation to queries. We run into the same problem with "queries" as with "update". Both are potentially included in "démarches" but not to the exclusion of all else; certainly not to the exclusion of the main idea of being able to do-it-yourself. That's it! It's the DIY part of the thing. BUt how to say it?

"Personnalisé" could be replaced by "vous concernant". Maybe, oddly enough, IGNORING any indea of translating "personnalisé" might just do the trick. After all, "your" precedes; it is obvious it is adressed to the individual. (Also a sneaky way of avoiding the your/personalzed/individual problem, no?)

consult your tax account online, *carry out any needs specific to your account*, or simply pay
Hello,
This is a vague term in French, and, as you already know, literally means "personal steps" (taking action with regard to your specific tax situation: queries, collecting information, making tax calculations online, etc).
The problem is, is that the literal translation above sounds very awkward in English. So I believe that we'd more naturally say "carry out any personal (tax) needs".
So then we'd have: consult your tax account online, carry out any tax personal tax needs, or simply pay.
I hope this helps.
