I'm not familiar with the way 'conservatoire' is used in this letter from one exec to another, discussing his temporary reassignment pending litigation against the company. Does 'conservatoire' refer to the retention of the exec versus his expulsion?
"Dans ces conditions, pour protéger [la société] et vous protéger vous-même, j'ai décidé de modifier temporairement votre affectation au sein de notre Maison et vous ai demandé d'effectuer une mission auprès du Directeur des Achats. Cette décision conservatoire nous a été très vivement conseillée par les avocats américains chargés de notre défense."

Actually, I think "precautionary measure" or Jane's "precaution" sounds good. But since the asker hasn't taken them up, I suggest this as a way of saying its a pro tem decision to preserve the company's position by moving the chap out of the line of fire while not making the concession that his dismissal would imply.
