French to English Tech/Engineering Manufacturing packaging
Les étuis sont conditionnés manuellement et/ou sur des lignes de conditionnement automatiques à cadence variable.

This is for a well known alcoholic drinks firm in their specifications for a supplier of 'étuis' under the section 'Utilisation'. Normally, I would have translated it as 'packaging line' but I am not so sure here since the 'étui' itself is the packaging.
I suppose they are talking about what happens to the 'étui' once it is delivered to the drinks factory.

Can you have a 'packaging line' for the packaging itself?

Well that crossed my mind but it comes under the section 'Utilisation' which to me means the use the drinks company is going to make of them.

I know it's probably none of the bottler's business quite HOW the boxes are made or packaged, but people DO have a nasty tendency to cut and paste vaste swaths of text from other people's documents and omit to delete what does not necessarily apply ...

Since this is from the drinks' manufacturer's specification 4 the manufacture of boxes for its bottles, is this not likely 2B the packaging line for those boxes (folded flat), packed 50, say, 2 a carton for delivery 2 the bottling (& packaging) plant?

That's possible - but wouldn't that be two procedures on the same line? Unfolding+Filling? hmm, not sure either now!

Two different things? Hi Emma, I think the boxes might be delivered 'flat' and then are folded into shape manually. It could be that the 'ligne de conditionnement' comes later on in the process, as you say when they actually put the bottle into the box, but I must admit to being a bit confused -maybe packaging line could be used for both preparing the packaging and packaging the drinks product?

Hi Alain - could they be describing the stage when the bottles are placed in the "étuis"? I can't see why it might be a manual procedure otherwise.

I once worked during the school Christmas holidays in a brewery beer bottling plant. First the beer was bottled by machine, and then the filled bottles were put in crates manually. Both terms would, I think, individually be called "conditionnement" as would the entire process.

The real emphasis seems to be between "manuellement" and "automatiques" - and then there's presumably the process of putting the "étuis" into cartons...

agree Simon Cole : the bottle is "primary" packaging (product contact), the box is secondary packaging, and there could then also be packaging into bulk shipping cartons. But yes, it's all packaging!

Thanks, Simon. I suspect the "étui" is a fancy box that contains one bottle, packed 6 or 12 to a carton, etc. "Utilisation" seems like just loose use of the word (starting from a specification outline document).
