French term

à la pige

French to English Tech/Engineering Manufacturing
I'm having trouble with "à la pige" in the following sentence:

faire une vérification à la pige des etiquettes

These are items being checked when first received to ensure compliance with specs. l think they just mean check each label by piece but I wanted to be sure. I can't think of any other meaning than this. Does anyone have a different idea?
Change log

Oct 4, 2013 07:44: Tony M changed "Level" from "Non-PRO" to "PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (3): Yolanda Broad, Steffen Walter, Tony M

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Tony M Oct 5, 2013:
@ Kashew I don't think so; the use of 'pige' definitely suggests it is geometry that is being checked; if you look at the GDT article and mchd's Wiki ref., it explains it better...
kashew Oct 5, 2013:
An afterthought! If it's print quality mainly being checked then "Master" could apply.
Daniel Weston (asker) Oct 4, 2013:
some additional context This is a quality control procedure document. The sentence comes under the heading of the "handler's" responsibilities" - here's some wording before and after:

établir les quantités reçus à l’aide de la feuille d’expédition.
faire une vérification à la pige des étiquettes afin d’établir la bonne identification des unités conformément aux exigences stipulées par la spécification d’achat applicable et par le P.O.

agree mchd : gauge is proper alternative in this case, thus I would say : gauge of items as per each label

Hi Daniel. I haven't heard from you since you moved from Hawaii to California. I don't ever know if you remember me or my newsletter ...

à la pige = freelance
faire de la pige = to freelance
faire du travail à la pige, faire des piges = to work freelance
être payé à la pige = to be paid piecework = piecework rate
travailler à la pige, faire des piges = to do freelance work

It could also mean the following ...
Choisir au hasard = select at random ...
Faire une vérification à la pige des étiquettes ... Vérification à la pige ... Select at random ...
Note from asker:
Of course I remember you, Jean-Claude! I've been very busy but I don't always have many questions. Your answer is certainly plausible and one that I hadn't considered before. Thanks

Given the reference information we have, I'm pretty sure this is the technique involved, and I'd say this would be a good way of expressing the idea in EN.

In line with mchd's ref....

Here is one of many entries from GDT, many describing some form of gauge, but this one in particular appearing to correspond most closely to your context (note: no EN translation is suggested!)
