French to English Science Mathematics & Statistics Air pollution in the home
Relation entre la typologie de la pollution par les COV et les autres paramètres.

I have doubts about translating this as 'typology' - I can only find translations which use it in the same sense. Could I use 'pattern' ? Or indeed 'typology'? -but I need to be convinced as I am generally suspicious when I can't find non-translated examples.

Thanks Liz Thanks for your answer Liz. The definition of 'typology' you quote confirms my suspicions (I think) that 'typologie' here is not being used in the same way. The typology of VOCs is that they are just that (i.e. volatile organic compounds), here we are talking about the relationship between these compounds and the other pollutants.

Another example from the text "la typologie de la pollution obtenue est-elle celle du logement ou celle de la pièce enquêtée?"

Just someone trying to sound high-falutin and scientific in French.

Relationships between the types of pollution (as a function of the VOCs they contain) and other parameters.

Relationships between the VOC contents of different types of polution and other parameters.

Knowing what the "other parameters" are might be of help too: other pollutants determing the "typologie", wind speed, wind direction, propensity to asthma, allergies, etc.

Or just "pollution", assuming that the text has made it clear that we are talking about pollution of different kinds, with different components and combinations/proportions thereof.

The "pollution" outside a refinery in Rouen will not be the same as the "pollution" outside a piggery in Brittany.

"Is the pollution identified that of the individual room or of the entire home?"

Cartesianism again. Just as they have to talk about not about climbing up a hole but "escalader les PAROIS d'un trou" - (comment peut on escalader un trou, qui est absence de matière?) they can't talk about "pollution" as being not the phenomenon itself but just a certain subset of that phenomenon.

Well, if the "other parameters" are as you say, that complicates matters, since you will then have several "typologies", presumably: typologie par les COV, typologie par la radiation, typologie par les allergènes ...

Hi Bourth, 'other parameters' are simply the other pollutants (allergens, radiation etc).
Yes, I think you've hit the nail on the head - I just knew there was something fishy about translating it literally.
Yes, -breakdown/composition equate better to typologie (that's why I thought of pattern) than typology.

used it as is . The word comes from combining two greek words. How would you translate words such as telephony for instance. They do not call for a translation.

Hi L J W. Unfortunately, in my experience, languages don't work like that - sometimes straight translations work, sometimes they don't!

trouble is "classification" exists in French :-) but certainly on the Spanish forum "classification" has been used for tipología.
