French term

Effectif tronqué

French to English Science Mathematics & Statistics
I am translating the results of a blood gas analysis report. It gives the values for pH, PO2 and CO2 and then gives the values for:

Effectif tronqué
Moyenne tronqué (calculée à partir de l'effectif tronqué)
Coefficient de variation (%)

Does anyone know what the English equivalent of "effectif tronqué" would be?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Discussion

SJLD Jan 26, 2012:
effectif suffisant = adequate sample size
B D Finch Jan 26, 2012:
effectif as per SJLD's answer, is the number of measurements comprising the sample population. It is not the value of any of those measurements.
Melanie Cole (asker) Jan 26, 2012:
Thanks for all the help so far. Just to give a bit more context, these relate to quality control results for the analyzers.

Example results:

pH: 7.572 U pH

Effectif = sample or population (size) in statistical terms

est suffisant (n >= 3).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truncation_(statistics)

In statistics, truncation results in values that are limited above or below, resulting in a truncated sample.[1] Truncation is similar to but distinct from the concept of statistical censoring. A truncated sample can be thought of as being equivalent to an underlying sample with all values outside the bounds entirely omitted, with not even a count of those omitted being kept.

thanks!
agree DLyons : But I think the Glossary entry should be "truncated sample size".

thanks - size in parentheses - since it will not always be idiomatic

Maybe I'm missing something, but MAC_1980 says "then gives the values for: ...
Effectif tronqué: 835"

This implies to me that the Effectif tronqué (or truncated sample size) is 835.
Peer comment(s):

neutral B D Finch : "Size" is wrong here, as should be obvious from "calculée à partir de l'effectif tronqué". Yes. However the calculation of CV uses both sample values and sample size. "effectif suffisant" is "adequate sample size" might help.
16 mins
Why? Isn't 835 the sample size??
neutral SJLD : you can add size if you want, not really necessary, but of course 835 is the number of observations in the sample = size of the trimmed sample

I think one needs to for clarity. I'm happy to remove this answer, if you add "size" to your answer :-) // P.S. I just noticed your 38 min note mentioning "size".
