French term

amortisseur a eau

French to English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering tractors
Context:
Le siège du conducteur du tracteur a été complété d'amortisseurs à eau, l'engin proprement dit a été garni d'un garde-boue, etc.,

This tractor will work in marshy conditions and will have heavy loads - I am thinking of 'hydraulic dashpots' but am not sure whether this is the correct meaning - does anyone know?
Thank you for your help.

hydraulic damper

A bit of a stab in the dark really, but I can't help wondering if your text is original French, or itself a translation. If often happens that people confuse the meanings of "hydraulique", which can refer to water (aménagement hydraulique = dam, etc.) and to (power-)hydraulics, which of course generally uses oil.

Hydraulic dampers (whether they use oil or water I don't know)certainly can be used for tractor and truck seats :

Black leather/PVC seat
Air comfort system and deluxe air suspension with double acting hydraulic damper. Applications: Trucks (Rigids & Tractor Units)

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I am pretty sure that this is right and it is what I went for in the end. I think your point about it being a translation is probably spot on - it was for a company in Antwerp, which leads me to believe that it had been translated from Flemish. Thanks for your well-thought out answer - thanks too to Dusty, the first on the scene, for quickly eliminating the 'dashpot' possibility, and to everyone else for their contributions.....thank you to my friends and family too, for....."

shock-absorbers / dampers

Well, I'm not sure of the exact term, but what I am pretty sure of is that 'dash-pots' is NOT right!!

This means that the driver's seat is mounted on some kind of shock-absorbing mounting; both shock-absorber and damper could be applicable, you'd need to do some research to check the sort of terms used in tractor-land.

As for the water part, can't offer any specific suggestions, 'cept it MIGHT be 'hydraulic' (tho' that's confusing!)
