I am proof-reading a promotional brochure for a hi-tech machine used in optical applications.
In the French version, the author (French native speaker) has used the title "le rendez-vous des experts" to head a section on the unique technical features (developed in-house) of the machine being promoted. She translated this as
"Meeting place of experts", which I find inappropriate, but am at a loss to find a phrase to replace it.
Any ideas please ?!

"le rendez-vous" is often used to mean (in a promotional sense) something along the lines of "where you'll find something for everyone (involved in sector x)", e.g., "le rendez-vous des artistes" is not just where the artists go to meet, so I would read this as having something to please every expert in the field - Sorry for the late answer

This could be taken to mean exactly what you think it means, Michael (experts' minds coming together to design this machine). Even though the machine is now completed and being promoted, you could still leave the title in the present tense because the idea is that this machine is about experts coming together (although we know they've "already come together" to design it).
I hope this helps.

XXXX machine: Bringing the experts together
Hello,
Could it be that this new machine brings experts together for discussion, events, etc? It's a reason for them to come together. There are conferences, get-togethers, etc for experts in the field to discuss the newly created machine.
To me, the French is not that clear , but I don't have the full context. If it meant that this machine was the product of experts' ideas coming together, you would think the French would read "le rendez des idées des experts", don't you?
If you say "ProZ: le rendez-vous des traducteurs", you're really saying "ProZ: Where translators comes together" or "The place for translators."
This word fascinates me in French. I did an intensive study on this French term a few years ago. It's such an all-inclusive word in French, but usually requires a specific term in English.

I suspect the author chose it because it is punchy, rather than because it had any special relevance ! I certainly agree with your comments about problems of translating "le rendez-vous de ..." |
