: Yes, that's what it sounds like; the 'étalon' presumably means a calibration or standard one against which others can be compared; or it might just be redundant...

From what I had guessed and from the Larousse definition of 'pige' :- longueur arbitraire prise comme etalon, I wondered if 'yardstick' would be the best translation in your particular context. A yardstick could be for anything at all, used as a standard to measure against. Any help?
