derogatory or not derogatory? my first reaction was to think it was, making my choice of translation 'cloying', 'sickly' or 'sticky-sweet'. Then I found this link: http://www.thefrenchtouch.org/tft/objet.php?objet=1604 and looked again at your context and came to the conclusion that slick is a really good translation.

garage leanings Ben's Symphonic Orchestra is the artist, and the review came from the mag "Jalouse" (it's an old review so yeah, sorry, I should've included the name to start with!).

Although I wouldn't call his music "grunge", it has "garage" leanings, so maybe "adipeux" is referring to that aspect (ie. we're not talking Peter, Paul and Mary kind of folk here :).
Another word to describe it in another review is "bricolé", so there is that...
