Production music

There are lots of terms out there but this might be more comprehensive. Also See my website reference where they site both terms and describe it as "extensive and diverse collection of production music, appropriate for all forms of media projects (TV/Films/Background Music, etc.). "

Oops - where they cite both terms....
Note from asker:
Thanks! I found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stock_music "Production music is the name given to the music owned by production music libraries and licensed to customers for use in film, television, radio and other media." Fits the bill.

background music

as http://www.granddictionnaire.com confirms in its description, the single best term is background music.
sometimes called "fond sonore" in french.
see http://www.sacem.fr/portailSacem/ where "illustration sonore" is used in various places, all amounting to background music....

You mentioned scores and soundtracks as well but I think they are too specific for translating the term "illustration sonore".....
Peer comment(s):

agree Tony M : Yes, 'background music', and what they are describing first is known as 'library music'

Soundtrack

I wouldn't have thought it would be 'score' as that refers to the sheet music version. Soundtrack seems most likely if it is talking about music added to a documentary to enhance it or set the scene

The term soundtrack refers to three related concepts: recorded music accompanying and synchronized to the images of a motion picture, television program or video game; a commercially released soundtrack album of music as featured in the soundtrack of a film or TV show; and the physical area of a film that contains the synchronized recorded sound.
Found on wikipedia- I will see if I can find something a little more authoritative.

disagree Tony M : No, soundtrack usually refers to either the technical thing (as in your last ref), or else, the specific music that belongs to a film.

sound pack

Ormiston has it, but it's two words. "Background music" or "sound track" doesn't get to the specificity of what's being offered -- both are too broad and general.
Elsewhere in this quote, I'd use "enhance" and "enhancement" for "illustrer" and "illustration."

But for "musique d'illustration" you could use "background music."

Oops! "musique d'illustration" should also be either "sound pack" or "music library." This and the above are what I get for not previewing my answer! Sorry!

mood music

While musique d'illustration is, I think, "stock music", you might want something like "mood(-setting) music" for illustration sonore. Or was that not your question?

"Imaging music" does not seem to be said, strangely I should have thought, since "imaging elements" does!

MOOD MUSIC A term which has had two distinct uses: (1) In motion picture and broadcasting, it refers to musical cues used to SCORE AN EMOTION, cues created for the purpose of UNDERSCORING WITHIN A PRODUCTION MUSIC LIBRARY, also known as a "Mood Music Library." (2) In popular music, instrumental background music for establishing a pleasant or relaxing mood.

stock/production music

STOCK MUSIC, also commonly known as PRODUCTION MUSIC, is a less expensive alternative to the use of popular or well known music in a production, since it is NOT NECESSARY TO OBTAIN SPECIFIC PERMISSION or pay additional clearance fees for the use of a song that has instant recognition.
Stock Music provides an easily licensed alternative for scoring productions and adding music to films, videos, radio or televisions programs and commercials, CD-ROMs, DVDs, multimedia, Web sites, training and marketing presentations, on hold messages, musical recordings, interactive programs, computer games, audio-visual or computer generated displays and programs or presentations that incorporate streaming audio.

Most Stock Music Libraries provide various music licensing options that are designed to meet the needs of large and small production companies alike, working in both the broadcast and non-broadcast industries.
Stock Music is generally placed IN THE BACKGROUND, BEHIND THE DIALOG OR VOICEOVER, where it can SET THE MOOD, provide a suitable BACKDROP FOR A MESSAGE, promote the product, activity or event being featured, IDENTIFY THE LOCATION OF THE SCENE or highlight the plot’s action.
Stock Music is offered in a wide variety of both period and modern genres, styles, moods and tempos - everything from classical orchestrations to animated cartoon compositions.

Stock Music compositions are often provided in several different versions or lengths: a full length version, an underscore or rhythm track version (for more subtle use under voiceovers), and a number of different broadcast lengths (60 seconds, 30 seconds and 5 to 15 second stingers). The broadcast versions are produced to eliminate the need for the user to create his own edits for specific kinds of production applications (like commercial spots).

If the Stock Music is used in a broadcast or public performance production, its composers and publishers are also entitled to receive performing royalties from performing rights societies like ASCAP, BMI, SOCAN, PRS and APRA.
