French term

base chaude / base froide

French to English Tech/Engineering Nuclear Eng/Sci
Hi all,

I know this question has come up before (http://www.proz.com/kudoz/french_to_english/nuclear_eng_sci/... but I don't know if it was answered correctly.

This comes up in several documents I'm translating about inspection and maintenance procedures at a nuclear facility.

1st example, in a document about inspecting and maintaining equipment:

[DMIN = MAINTENANCE AND NUCLEAR ENGINEERING DIVISION]

2nd example, in a different document about the organization procedure for the DMIN:

For "base froide", I find these interesting links:

...base froide (froide car elle ne contient aucune pièce radioactive)...

...Le site de Saint-Leu-d’Esserent, qualifié
de «base froide» parce qu’on y entrepose
du matériel de centrales nucléaires non
radioactif...

Are there English equivalents for this?

Merci d'avance !

Discussion

Hattie Hill (asker) Oct 25, 2010:
Termium If you type "chaud" into Termium, the first entry that comes in says:

chaud = hot
Said of a local or installation that contains or may contain highly radioactive materials

So perhaps "hot installation" and "cold installation", or "hot facility" or "cold facility"?

Impacts to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) complex caused by early closure (prior to 2018) and Demolition and Dismantlement (D&D) of the Test Area North (TAN) HOT SHOP and its support facilities are explored in this report. [ ... ] The TAN-607 facility is a two-story, reinforced concrete building designed and constructed in 1954 as a NUCLEAR “HOT” SHOP, nuclear fuel storage pool, and manufacturing facility. Beginning in 1980, the THS and associated facilities were used to inspect, research, and store material for the TMI reactor accident. TAN-607 is also used to store other SNF. Throughout the DOE complex, TAN-607 is a unique facility. A list of recognized, unique, capabilities in this “one-of-a-kind” hot shop facility and supporting infrastructure is found in Appendix A. [ ... ] TAN-607 HOT SHOP
The THS is a large, shielded high bay with overhead cranes, a large overhead manipulator, auxiliary wall-mounted manipulators, and other equipment for remote handling of radioactive material.
The walls and ceiling are constructed of ordinary concrete. The walls are 6 ft 10 in. thick up to the lower ledge. Between the lower ledge and upper ledge, the thickness is reduced to 6 ft 8 in. Between the upper ledge and the roof, the walls taper from a thickness of 4 ft 4 in. to 2 ft. The ledges provide support for the overhead crane and manipulator tracks

I'm assuming the shop for working on non-contaminated equipment is called a cold shop, but I haven't looked into it.

"Cold shop" looks reasonable:

The following relates to " test facilities required for development of the PLUTO nuclear powered ramjet engine":

General Description - The Hot Components Service Building will consist of the following operational areas, each separated by prescribed thicknesses of ordinary concrete shielding: (a) HOT SHOP, (b) five hot cells, (c) decontamination room, (d) Laboratory, (e) operating galleries and, (f) COLD SHOP. In addition, entry and transfer corridors, storage rooms, office, monitoring and clothes change facilities, showers and lavatories will be provided within the building. The Hot Components Service Building is shown on Drawings 70688O and 70688I.

HOT SHOP - The hot shop shall be a single room whose dimensions are 86' X 36 *. The size is dictated by the dimensions of a railroad car carrying an engine or, at a later date, can go up to the size of a complete missile. The room shall be equipped with a General Mills manipulator for large component assembling or disassembling and a 10 ton remotely-operated bridge crane for transporting the engine, engine parts, or activated accoutrements to assembly-disassembly stations.

COLD SHOP AREA - The cold shop area shall be equipped to carry out mechanical and electrical WORK ON TEST ITEMS AND EQUIPMENT WHICH ARE NOT RADIOACTIVE. This area will consist of the following three shops:
A, COLD SHOP
A shop approximately 40' X 80' in size will provide facilities for assembly, inspection and checkout of the test item and its components prior to initial test. COLD SHOP operations will include a functional checkout of the test item instrumentation and control system to the maximum extent which can be safely accomplished outside of the test cell. Following this checkout, the test item major components will be transferred on a railroad car to the mock-up area.
B, Mechanical Equipment and Maintenance Shop
This shop shall provide the facilities for mechanical fabrication and modification work in support of the test item assembly and installation, and for fabricating special supports, jigs and fixtures required by various programs,
0. Test Instrumentation and Control Shop
This shop shall provide for the maintenance repair and calibration of both the test item and test facility instrumentation and control equipment.

A number of civil engineering contractors refer to their mechanical workshops (large facilities for repairing and manufacturing specialized equipment) as base technique, so I'd say "shop" fits.

active /non-active area

is what I'd go for here. This seems to be a lot less specific than the example in the previous question, so I think this would work. You do talk about hot/cold cells or units, but this seems more general.

The Lftr is highly proliferation resistant. In order to get to its fuel, U233 that has been produced inside the very solid metal walls of this 200 ton reactor 1800 degree, white hot containment vessel, a proliferator must destroy and disassemble the reactor, lift its heavy reactor core out of a 100 meter deep reinforced aircraft crash proof hole in the ground, then cut the thorium containment vessel up into small pieces while enduring heavy killing gamma radiation exposure, next reprocess these reactor pieces using isotopic separation since the U233 is denatured with enough U238 to make chemical separation of bomb grade U233 impossible, and do all this without being detected.
