Discussion

David Vaughn Jul 1, 2005:
I don't disagree with the given answers, but just wanted to note that this expression is associated with speed, so it seems that something that includes the idea of beating rapidly would be best.

agree Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) : wildly

exactly
agree David Vaughn : Jane's "wildly pounding" is not bad. Of course if this is "romantic" literature, it could be "pounding like wild horse hoofs unchaining her torid bosom"

anything with torrid bosoms is fine in my book

out of her chest

"The young girl's heart was beating out of her chest." Depending on the context, you could also say her heart was "beating like crazy" or "beating like mad."
Peer comment(s):

disagree Josephine79 : sounds like Bat out of Hell!

agree Nick Lingris : In the right context, I'm all for "beating like crazy". In post-Alien days "beating out of her chest" has never been one of my favourites :-)

The young girl's heart was beating so fast it nearly burst.

Elle est amoureuse ou c'est une crise de tachicardie?
Peer comment(s):

neutral Josephine79 : This is OK, but "fit to burst" is better.
