French term

distribution en taille

French to English Tech/Engineering Physics système d'analyse de particules solides dans un milieu
Hello :)

I was hoping someone would help me with the following term: "distribution en taille"

Is it simply "distribution by size"?

Here is the sentence:
"La présente invention se rapporte au domaine de la détection et de la mesure de la quantité de particules solides (concentration, distribution en taille, masse totale, nature...)

Now that i've written it down it seems obvious that its "distribution by size" :S I'll leave it anyway :)

THank you

chris collister May 5, 2011:
As I said, the correct term is particle size distribution. A "range" is certainly not the same as a "distribution". Generally, but by no means always, particles such as dust are "normally" distributed (ie Gaussian) about a mean value. Both the mean and standard deviations of the distribution are important parameters in characterising the dust, sand, whatever.

Distribution ACCORDING to size 'Size distribution' sound a bit like 'size range' ie. particules of one molecule, two molucules etc
But I think they are talking about the distribution of certain particles in the air. Normally, the heavier the particule, the lower in the atmosphere
Therefore, I'm going to suggest 'distribution of particules ACCORDING to size'
chris collister May 5, 2011:
The usual term is "particle size distribution", or simply "size distribution", rather than "distribution by size".
