aune = ell (a measurement)

so this could well mean, measured again the centuries (history), there's no point in .......

In other words seen against the bigger picture, there's no point in (something or other)

Not sure these terms will fit very helpfully into your sentence, but I see that as being the underlying MEANING at least.
Maybe "looked at on a scale of..." or something along those lines?
