French term
gros nono
French to English
Art/Literary
Slang
quebecois
I think this is like "big loser", but I'd like someone familiar with the subtleties of quebecois slang to confirm.
It's from a short story about a literary critic who gets off on writing scathing reviews.
Je fais profession de tuer. Les gros egos. Les gros nonos. Les imbeciles heureux, les sans-genie de la vie.

big idiot
I think this means big idiots. I think "nono" might come from "nonours" a childish term for teddy bear. So something along the lines of a big daftie, a big idiot. But if you want further confirmation, I would actually be tempted to repost this in the reverse language combination to get native French speakers to tell you where it comes from - unusually, it is not in the Petit Robert.

: Not a comment on your suggestion, but to get the view of native French speakers, this should be posted as French monolingual - posting in the reverse pair will lead to it being reversed back to FR>EN

people who are asleep (mentally)
There is some indication that it refers to dogs, but also this:

big jerk, big schmuck
for UK I might say "prat" or "pillock" but since this is in a North American context ...
