Discussion

Julie Barber Nov 22, 2007:
Julie, you need to give more context, there isn't a fit-all term, it depends on the situation. Ie: a team leader/organiser for certain events; a day out for example. But it needs to be more defined
suezen Nov 22, 2007:
Is this the type of job?
Julie FOLTZ (asker) Nov 22, 2007:
for adults, teenagers, kids for any kind of disability. I need a global term.
suezen Nov 22, 2007:
have you got more context? Adults, children, type of handicap ...?

as one-size-fits-all suggestion but there are a range of roles depending on the specific context. If it applies to someone in a role like the link offered above, then this could work although it could also be a special educational needs coordinator (SENCO)
See below:
Special educational needs coordinator (SENCO)
A SENCO is a member of staff at a nursery, playgroup or school who co-ordinates special educational needs activities and services within that school. In a small school, the head teacher or deputy may take on this role. In a larger school, there may be a special educational

Residential social workers, also known as support workers or care officers, provide support to vulnerable residents of care homes, children’s homes, hostels, adult and youth centres. They use counselling, teaching, therapeutic and physical care skills to encourage residents to become as independent as possible.

As a residential social worker, you would usually specialise and support either children and young people, or adults.

The main areas of responsibility when working with children and young people include:

acting as a positive role model
assessing the needs of each child
establishing guidelines for behaviour
giving social, spiritual and emotional support
creating a safe and happy environment in which to live
providing leisure, sporting and creative opportunities
giving advice on independent living to those who are about to leave care
recruiting, training and supporting foster careers and volunteers.

trained group leader

"animateurs" are usually trained individuals who lead groups, at least in this context.
Example sentence:

Care for the Mentally Disabled (1986) and has since had an additional “A” .... MICAA group attendance; this is done only by the trained group leade

for MICAA group attendance; this is done by the trained group leader. ..... New York State Commission of Quality of Care for the Mentally Disabled.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Julie Barber : well you would have to be trained to be specialised, but it does say specialised not trained....(!) you cld be trained, without being specialised/ it's not the same you rascal ;-)

Good point. But we don't say 'specialised group leader' much, and 'trained group leader' is very common. And if you're trained to help the disabled, then aren't you by definition specialised in helping them? I'm not too worried about the nuance....
neutral Jennifer Levey : could be 'trained' or 'self-taught' - either way the person could be a 'specialist'

But would somebody who lead groups of disabled people be likely to be self-taught? I'mJust going for the functional equivalent-- how he/she got that way doesn't matter. Person standing in front of group of disabled people, leading the discussion, is a..?

could it be an occupational therapist?

occupational therapists are trained to help all handicapped people to adapt to their "working enviroment" In the mentaly handicapped it would be to give them more independance or in difficult cases it would be to help phsycho-corporal co-ordination
